Cancel a Subscription Before the Renewal Date: Find the Notice Deadline
The renewal date is not the date that decides anything. The last day you can still cancel is. Here is where to find it and when to set the reminder.

To cancel a subscription before the renewal date, work back from the renewal to the last day you can still cancel. That is the notice deadline. In the App Store it is about a day before renewal; for yearly plans bought directly, the terms can ask for weeks of notice. Set the reminder before that day, not before the renewal.
Most people put the renewal date in their calendar and feel covered. Then the reminder fires on the morning of the renewal, and the charge has already gone through, or the contract says notice was due a month ago. The renewal date tells you when you pay. The day you can still say no comes earlier.
That second date has a name in contracts: the notice deadline. For a monthly app it is a day or two before the renewal. For a yearly plan, a gym membership or a software license bought directly from the company, it can be 30 days or more. This guide shows where to find it for each kind of subscription and when to set the reminder.
What is the notice deadline on a subscription?
The notice deadline is the last day you can cancel and still avoid the next charge. It sits before the renewal date, and how far before depends on where you pay.
| Where you pay | Where the notice deadline hides | Safe reminder |
|---|---|---|
| Apple App Store | Apple's terms say you can be charged up to 24 hours before the new period | 3 days before renewal |
| Google Play | An authorization hold can be placed up to 48 hours before renewal | 3 days before renewal |
| Monthly plan on a website | The account or billing page, sometimes the terms | 3 days before renewal |
| Yearly plan bought directly | The terms of service or the order confirmation, under renewal or cancellation | 30 days before renewal |
| Contract with a notice period (gym, software license, service agreement) | The cancellation clause, often "written notice" a set number of days before | Notice period plus one week |
The pattern is simple. The more you pay up front, the earlier the real deadline usually is.
How do I cancel a subscription before the renewal date in the App Store or Google Play?
Cancel at least a day before the renewal, in the store that bills you. Apple's Media Services Terms say subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel them in your account settings, and that you are charged no more than 24 hours before the start of the new period. So a cancellation on the renewal day itself is too late.
Google Play help says that after you cancel you can still use the subscription for the time you have already paid for. It also warns that an authorization hold may be placed on your payment method up to 48 hours before the renewal. Canceling three days early costs you nothing in access and keeps you clear of both.
Where to find the notice deadline on a yearly plan
On yearly plans bought directly from a company, look in three places, in this order:
- The order confirmation. Many companies put the renewal date and the renewal price here.
- The terms of service. Search the page for "renew", "cancel" and "notice". A sentence like "cancel at least 30 days prior to the renewal date" is your deadline.
- The account billing page. It shows the next charge date and, often, a button that turns off auto-renewal.
Write the deadline next to the renewal date, so you see both. If the terms ask for written notice, keep a copy of what you sent.
Do companies have to warn you before a renewal?
Sometimes, and it depends on the state. California's automatic renewal law says that when a plan has an initial term of one year or longer, the business must send a notice at least 15 days and not more than 45 days before it renews. The notice has to say how to cancel.
Do not plan around that notice, though. It may land in a promotions tab, and other states have their own rules. The FTC's consumer guide gives two pieces of advice worth following: do not ignore a renewal notice, and check that the price is what you expected, because a renewal can cost more than a promotional rate you paid the first time.
Keep both dates without retyping them
The whole method comes down to two dates per subscription and one reminder that lands before the earlier one. A calendar can hold that if you type both in. The weak spot is the typing: yearly plans renew once, a year after you last thought about them.
This is where dEssence fits. Send Tracy the renewal email or a screenshot of the billing page, and ask her to remind you before the last day to cancel. She keeps the renewal date and the notice deadline together and writes first when the earlier one gets close. Turning a forwarded document into dates and reminders is part of the Pro plan, $10 a month. She does not cancel anything for you, so the decision stays yours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel a subscription on the renewal date?
Usually it is too late. Apple can charge up to 24 hours before the new period, and Google Play can place a hold up to 48 hours before. Cancel at least three days ahead.
Will I lose access if I cancel early?
In the app stores, no. Google Play says you keep the subscription for the time you already paid for, and most websites work the same way. Check the cancellation page before you confirm.
How many days before renewal should I cancel a yearly plan?
Set the reminder 30 days before the renewal. If the terms name a longer notice period, add a week to that period.
What if I missed the renewal and got charged?
Contact the company first and ask for a refund, and keep a copy of your request. In the App Store you can request a refund through Apple's report a problem page. If a charge you did not agree to is not refunded, the FTC advises disputing it with your card issuer.
