Subscriptions That Renew in January: the December List to Go Through
Subscriptions that renew in January are the yearly plans you started or renewed last January, plus anything set to renew on January 1. The reminder emails for them arrive in November and December, in the busiest inbox of the year.

Subscriptions that renew in January are the yearly plans you started or renewed last January, plus anything set to renew on January 1. Annual plans bought during New Year sales and gift subscriptions from last Christmas usually fall here too. In some states the company has to email a reminder weeks before a yearly plan renews, so those emails arrive in November and December, between holiday orders and sale newsletters. Going through them in early December is the easy way to decide in time.
Why so many subscriptions renew in January
January is when a lot of yearly plans start. People sign up for fitness apps, language courses, meal kits and software in the first week of the year, and many New Year sales sell the annual plan at a discount. A year later, all of those renew at once, often at the full price.
Add the gifts. A streaming or app subscription given as a Christmas present, or one you bought for yourself in the December sales, often renews around the same time a year later, and nobody may have told you it was set to auto-renew.
Common ones to check:
- fitness, meditation and diet apps
- language learning and online course platforms
- cloud storage and software, including plans shared with family
- news, magazine and recipe sites
- warehouse club and shopping memberships
- gift subscriptions you received or gave last year
The reminder email comes early, and it gets buried
Several states require a notice before a yearly plan renews. For example, a summary by the law firm Morrison Foerster explains that California asks for a reminder 15 to 45 days before the end of a first term of a year or longer, and Colorado 25 to 40 days before a renewal. Mayer Brown describes Idaho's 30 to 60 days for terms of 12 months or more. Rules differ by state, and not every company sends one, but those that do send them for January renewals in November and December.
That is the worst time for an email to be noticed. It comes between shipping updates, Black Friday deals and holiday plans, and it is written to look routine: "Your plan renews soon". The useful part, the date and the price, is often one line in the middle.
Some services also have a notice date earlier than the renewal itself. If the terms say you must cancel a set number of days before, that is the real deadline. Our guide to canceling a subscription before the renewal date explains how to find it.
Keep, cancel or switch
For each item on the list, one question is usually enough: did you use it in the last three months? If not, cancel before the date. If you used it but are not sure about another full year, many services let you switch to a monthly plan, which costs more per month but lets you stop at any time.
Watch for price changes. A plan bought at a New Year discount often renews at the regular price. Our guide to what to do about a subscription price increase covers that case. If you are not sure what you pay for at all, start with how to find every subscription you forgot you had and the subscription audit template.
When you cancel, save the confirmation email or screen. If you are charged anyway, it is your proof.
For gift subscriptions, check who owns the account. If someone gave you a plan last year, the renewal may go to their card, and they are the one who gets the email. A short message to them in early December saves an awkward charge in January.
Where Tracy fits
Tracy, the assistant in dEssence, keeps the things you send her. Forward screenshots of renewal emails in Telegram or iMessage, or save a subscription's account page from Chrome. She keeps each renewal date and price on one list and reminds you a few days before each, so you can decide in time. She does not read your inbox or bank account, and she does not cancel subscriptions for you.
Frequently asked questions
Which subscriptions renew in January?
Mostly yearly plans that started or renewed last January, plans bought in New Year or holiday sales, and gift subscriptions from last Christmas. Your January card statement from this year shows most of them.
Do companies have to remind me before a yearly subscription renews?
In some states, yes. California, Colorado, Delaware and Idaho, among others, require a reminder before certain yearly renewals. Not every state does, so do not rely on the email.
When should I cancel a subscription that renews January 1?
Before the date, and earlier if the terms set a notice period. Cancelling a few days ahead leaves time to fix problems.
Will I get a refund if I forget to cancel a yearly subscription?
It depends on the service and sometimes on your state. Some offer a refund if you ask soon after the charge, others do not. Ask right away and keep the cancellation proof.
How do I find subscriptions that renew yearly?
Search your email for renewal notices and check your card statement for the same month last year. Yearly charges are easy to miss because they show up only once.
