DMV Renewal Notice Not Received? Your Registration Still Expires on Time

If your DMV renewal notice never arrived, your registration still expires on the date on your registration card. A missing notice does not extend it. In most cases you can renew online without the notice, using your license plate number and part or all of your VIN. California gives no grace period, so if the date is close, renew today.

Most pages about this are written by registration services that want to renew for you, for a fee. You can usually do it yourself in ten minutes. Here is what to do, in order, and what the late rules look like in two large states, California and Texas. Rules were read on the California DMV and Texas DMV sites on October 5, 2026.

What should I do if I did not get my renewal notice?

Do three things today:

  1. Find your expiration date. It is on your registration card in the glove box. The sticker on the plate shows only the month and year, but in California the registration expires on a specific day.
  2. Renew without the notice. Use your state DMV's online renewal. You need your plate number and the VIN (or its last digits), proof of insurance, and a card or bank account.
  3. Fix the address. A notice that never came is often a notice sent to an old address. Update it with the DMV so next year's arrives.

Does California have a grace period for vehicle registration?

No. On its registration fees page, the California DMV says it does not offer a grace period for annual registration fees. Pay on or before the expiration date on your registration card, or penalties apply. The same page says that if you do not receive a billing notice about 60 days before expiration, you should contact the DMV or use its fee calculator.

What do I need to renew without the notice?

In California, online renewal asks for:

  • your license plate number;
  • the last 5 digits of your vehicle identification number (VIN);
  • a credit card, debit card or checking account;
  • insurance on the vehicle, and smog certification already on file with the DMV, if your car needs it.

The VIN is on your registration card, your insurance card, and on the dashboard near the windshield on the driver's side.

What are the late penalties in California?

They grow the longer you wait. Per the California DMV, a late renewal adds a percentage of your vehicle license fee plus two late fees:

Days lateShare of vehicle license feeRegistration late feeCHP late fee
1 to 10 days10%$10$10
11 to 30 days20%$15$15
31 days to 1 year60%$30$30
1 to 2 years80%$50$50
More than 2 years160%$100$100

These penalties come on top of the normal renewal fees.

What if my registration already expired?

Renew now rather than at the end of the month. In California the penalty steps up after day 10 and again after day 30, so a few days can matter. If the car was parked and not driven at all, the DMV page says you can file a Planned Nonoperation (PNO) up to 90 days after the expiration date, but the late penalties are still due. Keep the receipt from the online renewal until the new card and sticker arrive.

How does Texas handle a missing renewal notice?

Texas is more forgiving, but it still has a limit. According to the Texas DMV:

  • You can renew online from 90 days before expiration up to 12 months after, if you have not been cited for expired registration.
  • You may drive up to five working days after expiration without penalty. After that, you can get a citation of up to $200.
  • Without a renewal notice, your county tax office can renew with last year's registration receipt, your Texas plate number or your VIN, plus a government photo ID.

Can I drive with an expired registration while I wait?

In California, no grace period means the registration is expired the day after the date on your card. In Texas, five working days. Other states set their own rules, so check your state DMV's site before you drive. If you have already renewed online, keep the confirmation with you until the new sticker arrives.

How to never depend on the notice again

Take a photo of your registration card the day the new one arrives and set your own reminder two months before the next expiration. Two months matches when the California notice would come and leaves time for a smog check.

dEssence does this for you if you send it there. Send Tracy the photo of your registration card or the sticker, or type "car registration expires June 9". She keeps the date and reminds you when you asked, for example 60 days and 7 days before. She does not connect to the DMV and does not renew for you; she keeps what you send and comes back in time.

Frequently asked questions

Is not receiving a renewal notice a valid excuse for late registration?

Generally no. The California DMV says to contact it if no notice arrives about 60 days before expiration, and it charges penalties after the date on your card.

Can I renew my registration online without the renewal notice?

Usually yes. California online renewal needs your plate number and the last 5 digits of your VIN. Texas accepts your plate number, VIN or last year's receipt.

Why did my renewal notice not come?

Often an old address on file, mail delays, or an opt-in to paperless notices you forgot about. Update your address with the DMV.

How long can I drive with expired registration in Texas?

Up to five working days after expiration without penalty, per the Texas DMV.
