Renewal Dates to Keep Track Of: The Ones Nobody Mails You a Letter About

The renewal dates to keep track of are the ones that cost money or time when they pass quietly: car registration, driver's license, passport, insurance policies, health coverage windows, FSA money, subscriptions and free trials, warranties, and contracts with notice periods. Some send a reminder, many do not, and a reminder that never arrives does not move the date.

This page is the map of every renewal date we cover on the blog. Each line says who usually reminds you, how early to act, and where to read more. Facts with dates were checked on official sites on October 5, 2026.

Which renewal dates should I keep track of?

Here is the full list, with lead times that leave room for paperwork, appointments and mail:

RenewalWho reminds youAct this early
Car registrationYour DMV, by mail or email, if your address is currentAbout 2 months
Driver's licenseYour state DMV, depending on the state2 to 3 months, more if you need a REAL ID
PassportNobody6 months or more before a trip
Car, home or renters insuranceYour insurer, usually30 days, to compare prices
Health coverage (open enrollment)Your employer or the Marketplace, sometimesBefore the window opens
FSA moneyYour plan administrator, sometimesEarly December
Subscriptions and free trialsRarely before the charge2 days before
WarrantiesNobody1 month before it ends
Gift cards and store creditNobodyBefore the expiry printed on them
Contracts with notice periodsNobodyBefore the notice date, not the renewal date
Memberships, passes, domain namesSometimes, by email2 weeks

The "nobody" rows are the ones to write down first.

Car registration and driver's license

Registration notices come by mail or email, but only if the DMV has your current address, and the notice is a courtesy. In California there is no grace period: the California DMV says to pay on or before the expiration date on your registration card, and to contact it if no billing notice arrives about 60 days before. Late penalties grow with every step.

For your license, check one more thing when you renew: whether it is REAL ID compliant (usually a star in the corner). TSA began enforcing REAL ID on May 7, 2025, and travelers without an acceptable ID must pay a $45 fee, according to TSA.

Passport

Nobody mails you a reminder. USA.gov advises renewing early because processing times vary, and notes that some countries and airlines deny entry if your passport expires in less than 6 months. If your passport has expired, you can renew it the usual way only if it was issued within the last 15 years. Children's passports are their own case: see Kids' Passport Expiration: The Rule That Ruins Trips.

Insurance and health coverage

Insurers usually send a renewal offer before the policy renews. The useful date is 30 days before renewal, when there is still time to compare prices. Health coverage has fixed seasons: Medicare open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7, and the HealthCare.gov Marketplace opens November 1. Plans through work use your employer's own window.

FSA money has its own end-of-year deadline, often December 31, with a grace period or a small carryover only if your plan offers one.

Subscriptions, free trials and warranties

Most subscriptions renew without a reminder, and a free trial turns into a paid plan on a set day. The date to keep is two days before the charge; see How to Cancel a Free Trial Before You Get Charged. Warranties never remind you at all. Write down the end date the day the box arrives, with the receipt.

Contracts and leases

For anything with an auto-renewal clause, the date that matters is the last day to give notice, commonly 30, 60 or 90 days before the renewal itself, whatever the contract says. Miss it and the contract renews for another term. Write both dates down: the notice date and the renewal date.

How to keep all your renewal dates in one place

Pick one place you already open, a calendar, a note or a spreadsheet, and give each renewal three things: the date, the lead time from the table above, and a reminder at that lead time. Then add new dates the day the document arrives, not when you remember.

dEssence was built for the second half of that job. Send Tracy a photo of the registration card, the passport page, the warranty receipt or the lease, or just type the date in your own words. She keeps it and texts you first at the lead time you ask for. On Pro, a document you send turns into dates and reminders. She does not connect to the DMV, your insurer or your bank; she keeps what you send and comes back in time.

Frequently asked questions

What renewal dates do adults forget most?

The ones with no reminder: passports, warranties, gift cards, and the notice date in a contract or lease.

How early should I renew my passport?

Early enough that it is valid for at least 6 months after your trip, since some countries and airlines require that. Processing times vary, so check them before you apply.

Does the DMV have to send a renewal notice?

A missing notice does not move the expiration date. In California, the DMV says to contact it if no notice arrives about 60 days before.

What is the best way to track renewal dates?

One list, with a lead time for each renewal and a reminder set at that lead time.
