FSA Deadline 2026: What to Check Before Your Flexible Spending Account Money Expires
The FSA deadline for 2026 is usually December 31. How to tell whether your Flexible Spending Account has a grace period or a carryover, and what you lose if you miss it.

The FSA deadline for 2026 is December 31 for most health Flexible Spending Accounts, the ones that run on a calendar plan year. Your plan may give you more time in one of two ways, never both: a grace period of up to 2.5 months, to March 15, 2027, or a carryover of up to $680 into 2027. The deadline to file claims is a separate date, set by your plan.
FSA here means a Flexible Spending Account, the pre-tax health account many employers offer. It is not the Farm Service Agency and not FAFSA, the student aid form, which share the letters.
The deadline confuses people because there are really three dates, and the rules that change them are set by your employer's plan, not by one national rule. Here is how to tell which one applies to you.
When is the FSA deadline for 2026?
For a health FSA on a calendar plan year, December 31, 2026. FSAs are generally "use it or lose it": according to IRS Publication 969, money left at the end of the plan year cannot generally be carried into the next year. The same publication lists two exceptions, and a plan can offer one of them:
| Date or rule | What it means | Applies if |
|---|---|---|
| December 31, 2026 | Last day to incur expenses for the 2026 plan year | Your plan year is the calendar year |
| Grace period to March 15, 2027 | Expenses in the first 2.5 months of 2027 can use 2026 money | Your plan offers a grace period |
| Carryover of up to $680 | Up to $680 of unused 2026 money moves into 2027 | Your plan offers a carryover |
| Claims deadline | Last day to submit receipts for 2026 expenses | Set by your plan |
The $680 maximum carryover and the $3,400 contribution limit for 2026 are set in IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32. A plan may set a lower carryover than $680.
Can an FSA have both a grace period and a carryover?
No. A health FSA can offer a grace period or a carryover, not both. IRS Publication 969 says a plan with a carryover is not permitted to also provide a grace period. Many plans offer neither, and then December 31 is the hard stop.
This is where a lot of advice online goes wrong: it describes the grace period and the carryover as if everyone gets both. You get at most one, and which one depends on your employer.
How do I know my FSA deadline?
Three places, in this order:
- Your FSA administrator's account page or app. Many show the plan year, the balance and the deadlines on the main screen.
- Your plan documents. The summary plan description or the benefits guide from open enrollment states the plan year, whether there is a grace period or a carryover, and the claims deadline.
- HR or the benefits team. Ask one question: "Does our health FSA have a grace period or a carryover, and what is the deadline to submit claims?"
Write the answer down. You will need it again next December.
What happens if you miss the FSA deadline?
The unused money is forfeited. Your employer is not permitted to refund it to you. With a carryover plan, only the amount above the carryover limit is lost; with a grace period plan, the money is lost after the grace period ends.
Missing the claims deadline is a separate mistake. If you had the eye exam in December but did not send the receipt by the plan's claims date, the expense may not be reimbursed even though you spent the money in time.
How to use up FSA money before December 31
Start with what you already need. Eligible expenses are set by your plan and IRS rules, so check your administrator's list first. Common ones are prescription glasses and contact lenses, dental work, copays and prescriptions. Booking an appointment in December is harder than in November, so the useful reminder comes early in the month, not on December 30.
And keep every receipt. You will need it for the claim, and your administrator may ask for it even after a card payment went through.
FSA and HSA are not the same
A Health Savings Account works differently: the balance stays yours from year to year. If you have an HSA, there is no December deadline to spend it. The deadline in this article is for FSAs.
Let Tracy hold the date
dEssence can hold these dates for you. Tell Tracy your plan rule, the balance and the claims deadline in your own words, or send her the page from your benefits guide; on Pro, a document you send turns into dates and reminders. Ask her for a reminder in early December and another before the claims deadline, and send her each receipt as you go. She does not connect to your FSA account or your employer; she keeps what you send and comes back on the dates you ask for.
