When to Start Christmas Shopping: What to Buy in October and What to Wait On

When to start Christmas shopping depends on what you are buying. Start the list in October. Buy early when the risk is that the item disappears: popular toys, handmade or personalized gifts, anything shipping far. Wait when the risk is overpaying: TVs, electronics, computers and appliances usually see their deepest discounts on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Most advice on this question says "start early" and stops there. Early is right for some gifts and costs money on others. The way to decide is to ask what could go wrong with each item: it sells out, it arrives late, or you pay more than you had to.

Here is how the 2026 season is shaping up, and a simple way to split your list.

Should you start Christmas shopping in October?

Start the list in October, and buy only part of it. You are not alone in starting early: in the NRF's 2025 holiday survey, 42% of shoppers planned to begin browsing and buying before November, mostly to spread out their budget (54%) or avoid last-minute stress (41%). In the same survey, 63% planned to wait until Thanksgiving weekend to do most of their shopping.

Both groups are right about different things. Early buyers avoid empty shelves and shipping stress. Thanksgiving-weekend buyers get the deepest discounts on the categories that have them.

When do holiday discounts peak in 2026?

Adobe's 2026 holiday forecast, published September 28, expects online discounts of up to 14% off list price in early November, up to 21% just before Thanksgiving, up to 30% during Cyber Week and 10 to 15% through December. October's Prime Day event on October 6 and 7 was expected to peak at 19%.

Prime Day event, October 6 and 719% off list price
Early November14%
Just before Thanksgiving21%
Cyber Week, November 26 to 3030%
Through December10 to 15%

What to buy early and what to wait on

The split is by category. Adobe expects the deepest discounts for electronics and computers on Cyber Monday, and for TVs, toys, apparel, appliances and furniture on Black Friday. Electronics are expected to peak at 30% off list price, toys at 29%, TVs, computers and apparel at 23%, appliances and furniture at 18%.

Toys sit in both columns. Discounts on toys are expected to peak on Black Friday, but the one toy everybody wants may not be in stock by then. Buy the scarce one early, and wait on the rest.

Is it cheaper to shop early for Christmas?

Not for the categories that go on sale. If you buy a TV in October, you are likely paying more than you would on Black Friday. For the rest, early is about having it at all, and about December not being a scramble.

There is a cheap middle path: some stores refund the difference if the price drops soon after you buy. Target, for example, matches its own lower price within 14 days of purchase. Buying early at a store like that and checking the price once more takes most of the risk out of an early purchase.

What is the latest you can start Christmas shopping?

For gifts that ship, mid-December. USPS Ground Advantage closes December 17 for delivery before Christmas in the contiguous US, and store order-by dates come a few days before that. After that you are into express shipping, in-store pickup and gift cards.

A simple October plan

  1. Make one list with every person and one idea each. Put the price you are willing to pay next to each.
  2. Mark each idea as "can disappear" or "will go on sale".
  3. Buy the "can disappear" items in October or early November.
  4. Watch the "will go on sale" items now, so you know their normal price by Black Friday.
  5. Check the list on November 27 and 30, and buy what hit your price.

Let Tracy do the watching

dEssence makes the waiting part easy. Save each gift idea from Chrome or Telegram as you find it, then ask Tracy to watch the price or the stock on the ones you are waiting on. She messages you when the price drops or a sold-out item comes back. On the Free plan watches are checked once a day, and on Pro, at 10 dollars a month, every hour. She watches only the items you ask her to, and the decision to buy stays yours.
