Klarna vs Afterpay vs Affirm: Late Fees and Payment Dates After Black Friday
Klarna vs Afterpay vs Affirm: all three split a purchase into four payments every two weeks with no interest. The difference is what a missed payment costs: Afterpay up to $8, Klarna up to $7, Affirm no late fee.

Klarna, Afterpay and Affirm all offer Pay in 4: the first payment at checkout, then three more every two weeks, with no interest. Where they differ is what happens when a payment fails. Afterpay's agreement allows a late fee of up to $8, Klarna's up to $7, and Affirm does not charge late fees. Affirm reports its pay-over-time loans to credit bureaus. After a Black Friday weekend with two or three of these apps, the bigger risk is often the calendar: four dates per purchase, in different apps, landing on the same weeks.
Klarna vs Afterpay vs Affirm at a glance
Most comparisons pick a winner. This one looks at the three things that matter after the shopping is done: when each payment is due, what a late payment costs, and what shows up on your credit file.
| Klarna | Afterpay | Affirm | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pay in 4 schedule | 4 payments, every 2 weeks | 4 payments over 6 weeks | 4 payments, every 2 weeks |
| Interest on Pay in 4 | 0% | 0% | 0% |
| Late fee | Up to $7, total capped at 25% of the order | Up to $8, total capped at 25% of the order | None |
| Free reschedule | Once per order | Once per order | Can change the payment date with autopay on |
| Credit reporting | Check current terms | Check current terms | Pay in 4 and monthly loans reported to Experian and TransUnion |
Fees and schedules change, so check each app's terms before you buy. Below is where each number comes from.
Late fees: the real difference
Afterpay
Afterpay's installment agreement says that if a payment remains unpaid ten days after the due date, a late fee of up to $8 can be charged, and the total late fees on one order will not exceed 25% of the order value. On a $40 order, that cap is $10.
Klarna
Klarna's Pay in 4 terms allow a late fee of up to $7 if a payment is still unpaid 10 days after its due date, and the total late fees on one order will never exceed 25% of the purchase amount. NerdWallet's Klarna review lists the same $7 figure and notes that Klarna pauses your account after a missed payment. The app shows the exact fee for your plan before you buy.
Affirm
Affirm does not charge late fees, including on Pay in 4, according to NerdWallet's Affirm review. Its longer monthly plans can carry interest of 0% to 36% APR, based on credit. No late fee does not mean no consequence: missed payments are still reported and count when you ask for the next loan.
Credit reporting
Affirm announced in 2025 that all its pay-over-time loans, including Pay in 4, are reported to Experian, and that loans issued from May 1, 2025 are reported to TransUnion too. The TransUnion announcement adds that these loans show on your credit file but, for now, are not factored into traditional credit scores.
For Klarna and Afterpay, what is reported and when depends on the product and their current terms. If you are about to apply for a mortgage or car loan, read the terms or ask the service before you use any of the three.
Which one fits which situation
There is no single winner, but there are clear fits:
- You worry about forgetting a payment. Affirm has no late fee, which takes the sting out of a slip. The trade-off is that the slip still shows up with the credit bureaus, and it counts when you ask Affirm for the next loan.
- You want a hard stop on spending. Klarna and Afterpay pause your account after a missed payment, so you cannot add new plans until you catch up. Some people like that brake.
- Money might be tight on one date. Klarna and Afterpay each let you move one Pay in 4 payment per order for free, which can push a payment past a payday.
- You are applying for a mortgage or car loan soon. Think twice about any new plan. Even if it is not in your score yet, it can sit on your credit file, where lenders may see it.
- The purchase is large. Longer monthly plans can carry interest of up to 36% APR at Affirm and around 36% at Afterpay's Pay Monthly, according to NerdWallet. At that point, compare it with a card or with saving up first.
In every case, use one service per purchase and only for things you would buy anyway. Our guide on whether to buy now or wait for a sale helps with that part.
The real problem after Black Friday: three schedules
Black Friday 2026 is November 27, and Cyber Monday is November 30. Buy one thing with Klarna on Friday, another with Afterpay on Monday, and a third with Affirm in early December, and you have twelve payment dates across three apps. Each app reminds you about its own payments. None of them shows you the whole week.
Here is what one Black Friday purchase looks like on its own, if the first payment is taken at checkout. Klarna takes its first payment when the store confirms the order, usually when it ships, so its dates can start later.
- November 27: first payment at checkout.
- December 11: second payment.
- December 25: third payment, on Christmas Day.
- January 8: last payment.
Add a Cyber Monday purchase and the dates fall three days later: December 14, December 28 and January 11. That is two payments in the week after Christmas, when the card is often at its lowest. If you are still choosing what to buy, our Black Friday 2026 guide has the store dates.
How to keep payment plans from overlapping
- Screenshot the schedule right after checkout. Every app shows the four dates and amounts on the confirmation screen.
- Put all dates in one place. One list, not three apps. Add the amount next to each date.
- Look at the busiest week. If two or three payments land in the same week, plan for it now, or use the one free reschedule before the date.
- Check the card on file. A failed payment is usually an expired card or a low balance, not a forgotten plan.
- Pay early if you can. None of the three charges for paying early, according to NerdWallet's reviews.
This is the same habit as keeping bill due dates in one place, only with shorter cycles.
Where Tracy fits
Tracy, the assistant in dEssence, is not a fourth payment app and does not connect to Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm or your bank. She keeps the dates you send her.
After checkout, take a screenshot of the payment schedule and send it to Tracy in Telegram, Chrome or on the web. She reads the dates and amounts and keeps them with the purchase. Do the same for the next plan, and ask her "what payments do I have before New Year?" and she answers from all the screenshots together. Ask her to remind you two days before a payment, and she does.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, Klarna, Afterpay or Affirm?
It depends on what you want to avoid. Affirm charges no late fees but reports Pay in 4 to credit bureaus. Klarna and Afterpay charge a capped late fee, up to $7 and $8, and pause your account after a missed payment. All three charge no interest on Pay in 4.
Does Klarna, Afterpay or Affirm charge late fees?
Afterpay can charge up to $8 if a payment is unpaid 10 days after the due date, with total fees capped at 25% of the order. Klarna can charge up to $7 on the same 10-day rule, with total fees also capped at 25% of the order. Affirm does not charge late fees.
Do buy now, pay later plans affect your credit?
Affirm reports its pay-over-time loans, including Pay in 4, to Experian and TransUnion. TransUnion said in 2025 they are not yet factored into traditional scores. For Klarna and Afterpay, check their current terms.
Can I move a Pay in 4 payment date?
Klarna and Afterpay let you reschedule one Pay in 4 payment per order for free, according to NerdWallet. Affirm lets you change your payment date if autopay is on, but not extend a due date. Do it before the date.
How do I keep track of several BNPL payments?
Take a screenshot of each payment schedule at checkout and keep all the dates in one list with the amounts. Look for weeks with two or more payments and plan for them early.
