When to Book Christmas Flights in 2026: the Late-October Window

For Christmas 2026, the best time to book flights is from mid-October to mid-November. Google Flights data puts the lowest Christmas fares about 51 days before departure, inside a low range of 32 to 73 days. For a flight on December 20, that is October 8 to November 18, with the middle around October 30. Prices tend to climb once you are inside that last month. These are patterns from past years, not guarantees, so set a price alert and buy when the fare looks right to you.

Christmas is the most expensive stretch of the year to fly, and every year the same question comes up in October: buy now or wait? This guide answers it with published data from Google Flights and Kayak, then covers the part most booking guides skip: what to keep track of once the ticket is bought.

When is the best time to book Christmas flights in 2026?

Google looked at past holiday fares on Google Flights and published the pattern in its 2025 holiday travel trends. For Christmas, the lowest prices showed up about 51 days before departure. The low-price range ran from 32 to 73 days out, and Google's own summary is that the best bargains are usually found when booking from mid-October through mid-November.

Turned into 2026 dates for a flight on Saturday, December 19 or Sunday, December 20:

  • About 73 days out (October 7 or 8): the low range opens.
  • About 51 days out (October 29 or 30): the lowest point, on average.
  • About 32 days out (November 17 or 18): the low range ends. After this, fares usually go up.

International trips follow a slightly different rule. Google's 2025 data says international fares were lowest 49 days or more before departure, so for a long-haul Christmas trip, earlier is safer than later.

Are Christmas flights more expensive this year?

Yes, for now. Kayak's 2026 Holiday Travel Check-In, published September 29, 2026, says holiday airfare is higher than last year, but that prices all year have followed patterns similar to 2025. Kayak's own words are that last year is "a useful guide, not a crystal ball." That is why the window above is worth following: the timing still holds even when the price level is up.

The cheapest days to fly for Christmas and New Year's

When you fly matters as much as when you book. Kayak's 2026 report lists the expected best-value departure days:

TripBest-value departureAverage round trip (economy)Priciest departure
Domestic, before ChristmasDec 21 and 22$469 and $466Dec 19
International, before ChristmasDec 23 and 24$1,063 and $1,024Dec 18
Domestic, after ChristmasJan 2Up to 45% less than Dec 27Dec 27
International, after ChristmasDec 31Up to 40% less than Dec 26Dec 26

Kayak puts the domestic saving at 18% compared with December 19, the priciest day to leave. In 2026, Christmas Day and New Year's Day both fall on a Friday, so the weekends around them are when most people travel. Moving a departure from the Saturday before Christmas to the Monday or Tuesday is often the simplest way to save.

The same choice in a table:

How to watch the price before you buy

Price tracking belongs to the flight search tools. In Google Flights, you can track prices for a route and dates and get an email when the fare changes. Kayak offers a similar price alert. Set one for your exact dates and one for the cheaper days nearby, such as December 21 and 22 instead of December 19.

A few habits help:

  • Search the whole trip, then one-way legs. Kayak notes that two one-way tickets can sometimes cost less than a round trip.
  • Check a second airport within driving distance.
  • Decide your top price before you start. When the alert shows a fare at or under it during the low window, buy.

If the price drops after you buy, some fares let you change and keep the difference as a credit. Our guide to what happens when a flight price drops after booking explains when that works. For Thanksgiving, the window is earlier; see when to book Thanksgiving flights in 2026.

What to keep after you book a Christmas flight

Buying the ticket is the first task, not the last. A Christmas trip comes with a few dates that matter later:

  • The confirmation code and the exact flights. You will need them for seat changes, bags and check-in.
  • The free-change or free-cancellation deadline, if your fare has one. Some bookings made through travel sites have a short window. Read the email for the exact words.
  • Check-in opening time, often 24 hours before departure.
  • Hotel or rental car cancellation cutoffs, which are usually separate from the flight. Our hotel free cancellation deadline guide covers how to find them.
  • Things to do before the trip: passport validity for international flights, a pet sitter, a gift that has to ship to the destination.

Let Tracy hold the ticket and the dates

Tracy is the assistant in dEssence. She does not search for flights or watch fares on flight search pages; Google Flights and Kayak do that well. Her part starts when you buy. Send her the confirmation email, a screenshot of the booking or the PDF, from Telegram, iMessage, Chrome or the web. She pulls out the flights, the code and the dates, and keeps them with the trip. Ask for a reminder before the free-change deadline or the day check-in opens, and she messages you then. She does not log into airline accounts or read your inbox; you send the booking, and she brings it back when it matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest day to book Christmas flights?

There is no single day. Google Flights data puts the lowest Christmas fares about 51 days before departure, which for a December 20 flight is around October 30. Watching a price alert through the second half of October works better than waiting for one magic day.

Is it cheaper to fly on Christmas Day?

Kayak's 2026 report does not point to Christmas Day itself. It names December 21 and 22 as the best-value domestic departures before Christmas, and December 23 and 24 for international trips. If December 25 suits you, compare it with those days on your route.

How far in advance should I book international Christmas flights?

Earlier than domestic. Google's 2025 data found international fares lowest 49 days or more before departure, so for a mid-December trip, look in October.

Will Christmas flight prices drop in December?

Usually not. In past years, fares climbed in the final month before Christmas as seats filled. Waiting for a last-minute deal is a gamble that rarely pays off for peak dates.
