USPS Hold Mail for Holiday Travel: How Far Ahead to Request It and When It Ends

USPS Hold Mail is a free service that keeps all mail for your address at your local Post Office while you are away, for at least 3 and at most 30 days. According to USPS, you can request it online up to 30 days in advance, and the request has to be in by 3 a.m. Eastern (2 a.m. Central, midnight Pacific) on the day you want it to start. You need a USPS.com account and an online identity check, so do not leave the first request for the night before you fly. When the hold ends, the carrier delivers everything on the last day, or you pick it up. Hold Mail covers only what USPS delivers: packages coming by UPS, FedEx or Amazon's own drivers need their own plan.

How USPS Hold Mail works

The details below come from the USPS Hold Mail page and the USPS Hold Mail FAQ, checked on October 23, 2026.

  • It is free and pauses delivery of all mail, letters and packages, for everyone at the address.
  • Length: at least 3 days, at most 30. For longer trips, USPS points you to mail forwarding instead.
  • How early: up to 30 days before the start date, or as soon as the next delivery day.
  • Cutoff: by 3 a.m. Eastern on the start day, Monday through Saturday. Postal business days skip Sundays and postal holidays, including Christmas Day and New Year's Day.
  • Online needs an account. You sign in to USPS.com and verify your identity, often through Informed Delivery. If your address is not eligible online, you fill out PS Form 8076 at the Post Office.
  • No single items. Hold Mail holds everything or nothing. It cannot hold just one package.
  • Back to back: at least 3 days must pass between the end of one hold and the start of the next.

After you submit online, USPS emails a confirmation number with a link to change the request. Keep that email. Without the number, a phone agent can only extend a hold; to shorten or cancel it you go to the Post Office in person with ID.

How far ahead to request it for the holidays

The 30-day window means you can set up a Christmas trip hold from late November. A good rule is to request it as soon as the trip is booked and inside that window, then forget about it.

For a trip from Saturday, December 19 to Sunday, January 3:

  • Earliest request: about November 19, 30 days before the start.
  • Latest request: before 3 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, December 19. If the identity check fails at midnight, you are stuck.
  • Start date: December 19, the first day you will not be home to collect mail.
  • End date: Monday, January 4. On the last day of the hold, USPS delivers all your mail, so set it to a day you are home.

Seventeen days fits easily inside the 30-day maximum. A trip longer than 30 days needs forwarding instead.

When the hold ends

When you set up the hold, you choose how it ends:

  1. Delivery on the last day. The carrier brings everything on the end date. If you are not home and it does not fit in the mailbox, the carrier leaves a PS Form 3849 notice and takes the rest back to the Post Office for pickup.
  2. Pickup at the Post Office. You collect it with ID. USPS says you must pick up within 10 days, or the mail goes back to the senders. Regular delivery starts the next postal business day.

If you come home early and pick up your mail before the end date, the hold is cancelled automatically and delivery resumes the next postal business day. If you are staying longer, extend the hold using the link in the confirmation email or by phone at 1-800-ASK-USPS.

UPS, FedEx and Amazon packages are separate

USPS Hold Mail holds only what USPS delivers. December is also the month of online orders, and many of them come with other carriers. Those drivers do not know you asked the Post Office to hold your mail.

According to UPS, My Choice members can have The UPS Store or another Access Point hold a package for up to seven calendar days at no additional charge. Sending a package there costs $5.99 on the free Basic plan and is included in Premium, $19.99 a year. FedEx Delivery Manager offers a vacation hold of up to 14 days, after which delivery resumes on the first business day after the end date; it does not work for packages that need a signature, and some shippers limit the options.

Before you leave, look at what is still on its way. Our guide to tracking multiple packages in one place helps you see which ones will arrive while you are gone and who is carrying them.

Where Tracy fits

Tracy, the assistant in dEssence, does not log in to USPS, UPS or FedEx, and she does not place holds. She keeps your travel dates and comes back when there is something to do.

Send a screenshot of your flight or hotel booking from Telegram, Chrome or the web. Tracy keeps the dates and reminds you when the Hold Mail window opens, a few days before you leave, and on the day the hold ends. If a house sitter is coming instead, our house sitter instructions template covers what to leave them about the mail.
