When to Book Thanksgiving Flights in 2026, Before the Window Closes

If you are asking when to book Thanksgiving flights in 2026, the short answer is now, and by the end of October at the latest. Kayak's 2026 holiday data says domestic fares have historically hit their low about five weeks before Thanksgiving, which this year is the week of October 19. Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, 2026.

Everything below comes from Kayak's 2026 Holiday Travel Check-In, published September 29, 2026 and based on searches on Kayak. These are patterns from past years, not a promise about this one. Kayak itself calls last year "a useful guide, not a crystal ball."

When is the best time to book Thanksgiving flights in 2026?

About five weeks before the holiday. Kayak says domestic Thanksgiving fares have historically dropped from their September highs and reached the lowest point about five weeks out, which in 2026 means the week of October 19. After that, prices tend to climb. Last year, fares rose as much as 16% in the week before Thanksgiving and 21% during Thanksgiving week itself.

So if you are reading this in mid or late October, you are inside the window. Waiting for November is the expensive bet.

What is the cheapest day to fly for Thanksgiving 2026?

Thanksgiving Day itself. Kayak expects Thursday, November 26 to be one of the quietest and cheapest days to fly, with fares up to 19% lower on domestic routes and 49% lower on international routes than on Friday, November 20, the priciest departure date.

If you need to arrive before the meal, Kayak's best-value domestic departure is Monday, November 23, at an average of $420 round trip in economy, 18% less than leaving on November 20.

DepartureWhat Kayak's data says
Fri, Nov 20Expected priciest departure, domestic and international
Mon, Nov 23Best-value domestic departure, $420 average round trip
Wed, Nov 25Best-value international departure, $639 average round trip
Thu, Nov 26Thanksgiving Day: up to 19% lower domestic, 49% lower international than Nov 20

Should you book now or wait for a drop?

For most people, book now. The historical pattern points one way after late October: up. If your dates are fixed and the fare you see is in the range you expected, waiting buys little and risks a lot, especially on popular routes where the cheaper fare classes sell out.

Waiting makes some sense in two cases. One: your dates are flexible and you can fly on Thanksgiving Day or the Monday before. Two: you are watching a specific route and the price is clearly above what you have seen for it this month. For that, use a fare tracker. Google Flights lets you track prices for a route or a specific flight and emails you when the price changes significantly. Kayak has its own price alerts.

Three ways to pay less without moving the trip

  • Shift the departure by a day or two. The difference between November 20 and November 23 is the same family dinner, at a lower fare.
  • Check one-ways. Kayak's data shows two one-way tickets, sometimes on different airlines, saved up to 29% on domestic routes in its holiday sample. Read the rules: if one flight changes, the other airline does not have to help.
  • Check nearby airports. A second airport within driving distance often has a different fare.

Booking Christmas too? Do it in order

If the family meets twice this season, book Thanksgiving first, because its window closes first. Kayak's 2026 data for Christmas points to Monday and Tuesday, December 21 and 22, as the best-value domestic departures, at average round trips of $469 and $466, while Saturday, December 19 is expected to be the priciest. After Christmas, a domestic flight on January 2 could cost up to 45% less than one on December 27, the priciest post-Christmas departure.

Booking for a family

Fares for several people add up fast, and the cheapest fare class sometimes has only a few seats left. Two habits help:

  • Search for the whole group at once, then check the price for one traveler. If one ticket is much cheaper, the cheap seats are nearly gone; book now rather than later.
  • Seat children with you at booking. On basic fares, seat choice may cost extra or happen only at check-in. Read the fare before you pick the cheapest line.

What to do right after you book

Buying the ticket is the step everyone writes about. What comes after is where people lose money or time.

  1. Read the change and cancellation rules on your fare. Basic economy fares often cannot be changed. Note the date until which you can cancel or change for free, if your fare has one.
  2. Keep checking the price for a while. If the fare drops after you book, some airlines give you the difference as a credit. Our guide on what to do when a flight price drops after booking has the details by airline.
  3. Put check-in on your calendar. Online check-in usually opens 24 hours before departure.
  4. Save the confirmation where you will find it. The confirmation number, the seat and the baggage rules live in one email you will need again at the airport.

Hand the booking to Tracy

The fare part is a job for a flight tracker. The part after it is a job for an assistant. Tracy, the assistant inside dEssence, does not watch airfares: a flight search page is not a single item she can follow. What she does well is the booking you already have. Send her the confirmation email as a screenshot or file, from Telegram or the web. She keeps the flight times, the confirmation number and any free-cancellation date in the booking, and reminds you before check-in opens or before the date you can still change for free.
