Passport Expiring Soon? The Six-Month Rule That Stops Trips

A passport that expires in eight months can still stop you at the gate. Here is how the six-month rule works, how long renewal takes in 2026, and when to start.

Passport Expiring Soon? The Six-Month Rule That Stops Trips

If your passport is expiring soon, the date that matters is not the one printed on it. Some countries want your passport valid for at least six months beyond your trip, and airlines may refuse boarding if it is not. US routine renewal takes 4 to 6 weeks plus up to two weeks of mail each way, so start about nine months before expiration.

Most people check their passport once: when they book. They see a date two years out and stop thinking about it. The trouble starts when that date is closer than it looks. A passport that expires in May can be useless for a trip in January, because the country you are flying to counts from your departure, not from today.

What is the six-month passport rule?

It is an entry requirement used by some countries: your passport must stay valid for at least six months after the dates of your trip. The US State Department says some foreign destinations require this, and that some airlines will not let you board if you do not meet it.

Not every country uses six months. The European Union, for example, asks that your passport be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave the EU, and that it was issued within the last 10 years, according to the EU's Your Europe page for non-EU travelers. Other countries ask for six months from arrival, or only for the length of your stay. Since rules differ and change, the safe habit is to treat six months after your return date as the line.

How long does passport renewal take in 2026?

The State Department's processing times page lists routine processing at 4 to 6 weeks and expedited processing at 2 to 3 weeks for an extra $60. Mail is not included. Your application can take up to two weeks to reach them, and your new passport can take up to two weeks to come back.

Expedited ($60 extra)2 to 3 weeksUp to about 7 weeks

The State Department also says its busiest time is late winter through summer, and that October to December is quieter. If your passport expires next year, renewing this fall is the easy route.

When should I renew my passport before it expires?

About nine months before the expiration date. Here is the math: six months of validity that some countries ask for, plus up to ten weeks for routine renewal by mail, plus a few weeks of buffer for photos, forms and a busy season. That lands near nine months.

usa.gov's renewal page puts it simply: renew early, because processing times vary and some countries and airlines deny entry if your passport expires in less than six months. It also notes you can still renew an expired passport by mail or online, as long as it was issued within the last 15 years and you meet the other requirements.

Use your own dates to check it:

Can I travel if my passport expires in less than six months?

Sometimes. It depends on the country you are entering and on your airline. Some places only need your passport to be valid for the length of your stay; others want three or six months beyond it. Check the entry requirements for your destination on the State Department's country page before you book, and again before you fly.

What if my passport is already expired?

You may still be able to renew it instead of applying in person. usa.gov says you can renew an expired passport only if it was issued within the last 15 years, and the other renewal rules apply too. A child's passport cannot be renewed: passports for children under 16 are valid for five years, and they need a new application in person each time.

How do I remember a date nine months away?

Write the date down where it will come back to you. A note in your phone will not bring itself up. A calendar event works if you set it the day you look, and if the reminder is far enough ahead.

Or hand it to dEssence. Send Tracy a photo of your passport's data page in Telegram, or just type "my passport expires August 31, 2027". She saves the date and messages you nine months before, when it is time to renew. Before a trip, ask her "is my passport fine for a trip in March?" and she checks the date against the six-month line.

Tracy does not renew your passport or check a country's entry rules for you. You apply on the State Department's site or by mail, and you confirm entry rules for your destination.

Frequently asked questions

Does the six-month rule count from arrival or departure?

It depends on the country. Many count from the end of your trip, some from arrival. Treating six months after your return date as the line covers both.

Is expedited renewal worth $60?

If your trip is within about three months and your passport fails the six-month line, yes. Otherwise routine is enough when you start early.

Can I renew my passport online?

Eligible adults can, but only for routine service, according to the State Department. If you need expedited service, renew by mail or book an appointment.
