How to Keep Track of Return Windows Without a Spreadsheet

One date per order and one reminder three days before it. Return windows at Amazon, Target, Apple, IKEA and Zappos, and where each clock starts.

How to Keep Track of Return Windows Without a Spreadsheet

To keep track of return windows, write one date for every order you might send back: the last day to return it, counted from delivery or purchase depending on the store. Then set a reminder three days before that date. Amazon gives most items 30 days from delivery, Target most items 90 days, and Apple 14.

Return windows fail in a predictable way. The box arrives, the item is not quite right, it goes back in the box by the door, and the window closes while it sits there. The order email had the information all along, buried under shipping updates.

You do not need a spreadsheet to fix this. You need one date per order and a reminder that reaches you before it. The hard part is that every store counts differently.

How long are return windows at major stores?

StoreStandard windowWhen the clock startsExceptions worth knowing
AmazonMost items 30 daysDeliveryLate fee: 20 percent of the item price for the first 30 days after the "return by" date
TargetMost items 90 daysFor Target.com orders, the day you receive the itemsElectronics and entertainment 30 days; Apple and Beats 14 days; Target Plus partner items 30 days; Target Owned Brand one year
Apple Store14 daysThe day you receive the productNeeds the receipt and original packaging
IKEA US365 days unopened, 180 days openedThe date on your proof of purchaseOpened products need proof of purchase
Zappos60 daysReceipt of the orderNew condition, original packaging, tags on

Sources: Target's return policy, Apple's sales and refund policy, and the return policy pages of Amazon, IKEA and Zappos, read on October 5, 2026. Policies change, so check the page for your order.

Target adds one more twist: Target Circle Card holders get an extra 30 days on nearly all items. Your window can differ from a friend's at the same store.

Which date should you write down?

The last day to return. "Ordered October 3" makes you do the math every time you look at it. "Return by November 2" does not.

Work it out once, when the package arrives:

  1. Find the window. The receipt, the order page, or the table above.
  2. Find the start. Delivery at Amazon, the day you receive it for Target.com, Apple and Zappos orders, the proof of purchase at IKEA.
  3. Add the days. If the order page already prints a "return by" date, copy that instead.
  4. Set the reminder three days earlier. Enough time to repack, print a label and drop it off.

For example, an Amazon order delivered November 20 can go back until December 20, so the reminder goes on December 17. An Apple product received December 2 has until December 16, reminder on December 13.

What happens if you miss a return window?

At most stores the return is simply refused. Amazon is more specific: if you start a return and do not drop it off or complete the pickup by the "return by" date, it can charge a late fee of 20 percent of the item price for the first 30 days, and the full price after that. The item itself has to reach the drop-off by that date.

What to keep until the window closes

Keep four things together until the last day passes: the receipt or order confirmation, the original box and packaging, any tags, and, once you send it back, the drop-off receipt. Apple asks for the receipt and all original packaging. Zappos wants tags attached and the original shoe box. A photo of the drop-off receipt is your proof if the refund is slow.

Four ways to keep track of return windows

MethodSetup per orderReminds youKeeps the receipt with itFine for many orders
Email folder or labelTen secondsNoYesYes
Calendar eventTwo minutes, you do the date mathYesOnly if you paste it inGets cluttered
SpreadsheetTwo minutesNoLink onlyYes, if you open it
An assistant you send the receipt toForward or screenshotYes, before the date you ask forYesYes

For one or two orders, a calendar event with the last day in the title works well. In a season with ten open orders, the method has to survive you being busy.

Let the receipt remind you

We built dEssence for exactly this kind of date. When an order arrives, forward the confirmation to Tracy or send a screenshot of the order page, and tell her the store. Ask for a reminder before the window closes. She keeps the last day with the receipt and writes first, three days before or whenever you ask. Turning a forwarded receipt into a date and a reminder is part of the Pro plan, $10 a month. She does not read your inbox, so she only knows the orders you send her.

Frequently asked questions

Does the return window start at purchase or delivery?

It depends on the store. Amazon counts from delivery, Target.com orders from when you receive them, and Apple from the day you receive the product. IKEA ties its window to your proof of purchase.

Is there an app to track return windows?

Several apps do it, and some read your email to find orders. A calendar or an assistant you forward receipts to works too. Choose the one you will still use in a busy month.

Can I return something after the window closes?

Sometimes, as store credit or at a manager's discretion, but do not count on it. Zappos, for example, says returns for store credit after 60 days are possible only in limited circumstances.

Do holiday purchases get longer return windows?

Often. Amazon extended returns on most items bought November 1 to December 31 last season until January 31. Check each store's page for the current season.
