Preschool Enrollment for Fall 2027: Waitlists and Deposit Dates

Preschool enrollment for fall 2027 is already open at many programs, and some have closed their first round. For each one you need three dates: when applications open or close, when they tell you about a place, and when the deposit is due.

Preschool Enrollment for Fall 2027: Waitlists and Deposit Dates

Preschool and daycare enrollment for fall 2027 does not wait for 2027. At the programs we looked at on October 24, 2026, applications for the 2027-28 year were already open, and one public preschool had already closed its lottery window in early October. There is no national calendar: every program sets its own dates and its own deposit. What helps is knowing which three dates to find for each place on your list, and writing them down before the first one passes.

How two programs run fall 2027 enrollment

These two are examples of how enrollment works, not a guide to these programs. Your dates will be different, but the shape is often similar.

Needham Preschool, a public program in Needham, Massachusetts (enrollment page):

  • Applications for 2027-2028 received between September 8 and October 9, 2026 went into a random selection.
  • The drawing happens on or before October 30, 2026, and families hear the results by November 4, 2026.
  • Applications that are not picked go on the waiting list automatically. Applications received on or after October 10 join the waiting list in the order they arrived.
  • After acceptance, families pay a non refundable deposit of $300 for half day or $600 for full day, then register and send documents: birth certificate or passport, proof of residency, immunization record.

The Early Childhood Center at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn (admission page):

  • Applications and tours for 2027-28 are open now.
  • Families hear about admission in early February.
  • Once a child is accepted into a class, the family has a week to accept with a deposit and payment plan, or the child goes on the waitlist.
  • Children have been called off the waitlist as late as August.
  • Current families re-register in January, before new families hear back.

So one program finished its first round in October 2026 and the other will answer in February 2027. If you are only now looking at fall 2027, check each program on your list this week, not in spring.

The three dates to find for each program

Open each program's enrollment or admission page, or ask the office, and write down:

  1. When applications close, or when the first round ends. Some programs take applications in a short window and use a lottery. Others take them until spaces fill. Ask which one it is. An application that arrives after the first round may go straight to the waitlist.
  2. When you will hear about a place. This might be a specific date, like November 4 at Needham, or a month, like early February.
  3. How long you have to accept, and what you pay. Often it is a deposit, and often it is non refundable. At one of the programs above it is a week. If you do not accept in time, the place goes to the next family.

It also helps to write down two more things: what documents registration needs, and whether siblings or current families re-enroll first, as they do in January at the Brooklyn program. Re-enrollment fills spots before new families hear back.

If you are still choosing between programs, our guide to comparing daycare tour notes helps you keep visits side by side.

The deposit week is the one to watch

The hardest date is usually the last one. An offer letter arrives, and the clock to accept starts. If you are waiting on two programs, the first offer can come before you hear from the second. That is when the deposit question matters:

  • Is it refundable? At Needham it is not, and other programs may work the same way. A non refundable deposit you pay to hold a place you later decline is usually money you do not get back.
  • What does it cover? Some deposits count toward tuition, some are separate. The offer letter or the program's tuition page says which.
  • What happens if you say no? At the Brooklyn program, the place goes to the waitlist. Ask whether turning down an offer keeps you on the list for later.

Waitlists move, sometimes late. At the Brooklyn program, children have been called off the waitlist as late as August of the new school year. If you are on a list, ask how you will be contacted, and keep the date you joined and any reference number.

Keep the papers in one place

Enrollment comes with paperwork: an application confirmation, an offer letter, a deposit receipt, a registration packet. These are worth keeping together until the first day, since you may be asked for them again. Our guide to organizing kids' school papers covers a simple setup, and our summer camp registration dates guide works the same way for the next set of sign-ups.

Where Tracy fits

Tracy, the assistant in dEssence, keeps the dates you send her. Paste an email into Telegram or iMessage, save a program page from Chrome, or send a photo of a letter. She notes the application, reply and deposit dates for each program, reminds you before each one, and keeps the letters together. She does not contact programs or pay deposits.

Preschool dates are one of many family dates that come with no reminder, like the ones in our list of renewal dates nobody mails you a letter about.

Frequently asked questions

When does preschool enrollment for fall 2027 start?

It depends on the program. At the programs we checked, applications for 2027-28 were already open in October 2026, and at Needham the window started September 8. Check each program's own page now.

Are preschool deposits refundable?

Often not. At Needham Preschool, the deposit is non refundable. Read the offer letter or tuition page, since each program sets its own terms.

How long do I have to accept a preschool spot?

Each program sets it. At one program we looked at, families get a week to accept with a deposit. After that, the spot usually goes to the waitlist.

Do preschool waitlists move?

They can, sometimes late. One program says children have been called off the waitlist as late as August. Ask how they will contact you.

Should I apply to more than one preschool?

Some families do, because programs reply on different dates. Keep the reply date and deposit deadline for each so the first offer does not catch you before the second.
