When Is Winter Break 2026? Turning the District Calendar Into a Plan
In many US school districts, winter break 2026 runs from Monday, December 21, through Friday, January 1, with school back on Monday, January 4, 2027. Some districts start a few days earlier or later, so check your own district calendar.

When is winter break 2026? In many US school districts it runs from Monday, December 21, through Friday, January 1, and school starts again on Monday, January 4, 2027. That is the pattern in most of Washington State: in the state's 2026-27 list of school breaks, 238 of the 306 district entries we counted on October 23, 2026, are off December 21 to January 1. But it is not universal. Some districts break on December 18 or December 23, some return on January 5, and Christmas falls on a Friday this year, which moves things around. There is no national school calendar, so your district's calendar is the only answer that counts for your family. Here is how to read it, and what to do with the dates once you have them.
Winter break 2026: common dates, with examples
December 21, 2026, is a Monday, and January 1, 2027, is a Friday. That makes a clean two-week break, and a lot of districts take it. Others stretch or shift it. A few examples from published calendars:
| District or area | Winter break 2026 | Back to school |
|---|---|---|
| Most Washington State districts (OSPI list) | Dec 21 to Jan 1 | Mon, Jan 4 |
| Seattle Public Schools (OSPI list) | Dec 21 to Jan 1 | Mon, Jan 4 |
| Bellevue, WA (OSPI list) | Dec 23 to Jan 5 | Wed, Jan 6 |
| Tacoma, WA (OSPI list) | Dec 21 to Dec 31 | Fri, Jan 1 is a holiday, back Mon, Jan 4 |
| Washtenaw County, MI, including Ann Arbor | Sat, Dec 19 to Sun, Jan 3 | Mon, Jan 4 |
The Washtenaw dates come from Ann Arbor with Kids, which tracks the county's shared calendar; Michigan law has each intermediate school district, usually a county, set one winter break for its districts, though a district can ask for a waiver. OSPI itself warns that dates can change for weather and tells families to confirm with their district. Treat every row here as an example, not your answer.
How to find your district's dates
Your district publishes a calendar for the school year, usually as a PDF or a page on its website, and often again in the parent app. Search for your district name plus "2026-27 calendar." When you have it, look for four things, not one:
- The last day of school before the break. Often a half day or early release.
- The first and last days with no school. Holidays and teacher workdays at the edges can add a day.
- The day school starts again. Sometimes a teacher workday comes first and students return a day later.
- Anything else in the same weeks. Concerts, spirit days, the end of a grading period, and days your child care is closed.
Turning the calendar into a plan
The dates are the easy part. The work is what the break does to everything around it. Most of it has a deadline well before December 21.
Child care for the days you work. If both parents work through the break, those ten weekdays need a plan: a winter camp, a relative, swapping days with another family, or time off. Winter camps often open registration in the fall and fill early. We cover the timing in winter break camp registration.
Your own time off. Many workplaces want holiday requests in early. If you need the week of December 28 off, ask now, not on December 15.
Travel. The first and last weekends of the break are the busiest days to travel, so flights for them tend to go first. If your district returns on January 4, Sunday, January 3, is the busy day home.
The early-release day. The last school day before the break is often a half day. That is a pickup at noon on a Friday, which is easy to miss if it only lives in a PDF.
The return. January 4 is a Monday morning with the lunch account, the gym clothes and the forms that went home in December all due at once.
Here is the same plan as a list to work through in November:
- Find your district's 2026-27 calendar and note the first day off and the day school is back.
- Check for an early-release day before the break.
- Decide who covers each workday of the break.
- Register for winter camp if you need it.
- Request time off at work.
- Book any travel around the first and last weekends.
- Note anything due on the first day back.
Where Tracy fits
Tracy, the assistant in dEssence, does not read your district's website, the school app or your email. You send her the calendar, and she keeps the dates and comes back with them.
Take a screenshot of the December page of the district calendar, or a photo of the paper one on the fridge, and send it from Telegram, Chrome or the web. Tracy reads the dates off it: the early release, the break, the day school is back. Tell her which reminders you want and when. If you would rather have the whole school year in your phone's calendar, our guide on adding a school calendar to Google Calendar covers the link, file and PDF routes.
