UPS vs FedEx Signature Required: Who Can Accept Your Package

UPS and FedEx signature requirements depend on the service chosen by the sender. Check the exact requirement before delivery: FedEx direct and adult signatures need someone present, while some other shipments permit an authorized release.

UPS vs FedEx signature required: read the service name

Open the tracking details for the actual package. "Signature required" is the start of your check, not a complete instruction. Look for the signature level, the delivery address and any available delivery-management options. If the notice leaves the level unclear, ask the sender or carrier before arranging for someone else to receive it.

The sender chooses the shipment's requirements. Buying a gift does not necessarily let you remove those requirements after dispatch. A delivery preference saved in your account also does not prove that this package qualifies for unattended delivery.

Start by deciding whether you need someone at the address, an eligible adult with identification, or a release option that the carrier explicitly offers for this shipment. Avoid making arrangements based only on what worked for another package last month.

Compare the handoff requirements

These are U.S. delivery arrangements. Check the individual shipment for restrictions, and use the carrier's local rules for deliveries outside the United States.

Signature optionWho needs to be available? Can you arrange release without a person there?
UPS Signature RequiredSomeone at the delivery address, unless an approved alternative appliesSometimes, if this shipment is eligible and authorization is accepted
UPS Adult Signature RequiredAn adult 21 or older with government-issued photo IDNo unattended digital release
FedEx Indirect Signature RequiredSomeone at the address or an eligible nearby recipient, such as a neighborAn authorized release may be available
FedEx Direct Signature RequiredA person at the recipient's addressNo electronic signature substitute

FedEx's official signature-service documentation distinguishes indirect delivery from direct delivery: an indirect signature can come from a neighbor or building manager, while a direct signature comes from someone at the recipient's address. Direct does not mean that only the named buyer can sign. It does mean that a neighbor waiting at a different address is not the same arrangement.

UPS uses its own service labels. Do not assign FedEx's "indirect" rules to a UPS parcel because both notices mention a signature. For UPS, check the options on that parcel's tracking page and any limits imposed by the sender.

Choose someone who can meet the requirement

If FedEx shows Direct Signature Required, ask someone who can be at the delivery address. Confirm the date with them and explain that they need to answer the door. A friend offering to accept the parcel at their own home has offered a different delivery arrangement, which may not be permitted.

If either carrier shows Adult Signature Required for a U.S. delivery, arrange for someone at least 21 years old with the required identification. An 18-year-old who can usually accept household deliveries does not meet that age requirement. Ask the person to have their valid government-issued photo ID available when the driver arrives.

For FedEx Indirect Signature Required, a neighbor or building manager may be able to sign. Ask that person before relying on them. Give them the relevant day and package details privately, and confirm where you will collect the parcel afterward. Their willingness does not change a direct or adult-signature requirement.

In an apartment building, check what your front desk actually accepts. Some buildings have staffed reception; others have a package room that is unattended for part of the day. Ask whether a person will be available for the specific signature level. A locker or room code alone does not provide an adult's signature or ID.

Check whether digital release is offered

For eligible UPS shipments, the tracking page may offer Sign Digitally, or an option may be available through UPS My Choice. Read the authorization before submitting it. Adult-signature packages cannot be released this way, and sender restrictions or delivery conditions can prevent release for other shipments.

FedEx permits electronic authorization for eligible indirect-signature shipments. It does not accept electronic signatures in place of direct or adult signatures. If the option is missing, do not assume a note on the door will solve the problem. Use the instructions for your package or contact the carrier.

Before selecting a release, consider where the parcel would be left. A valuable gift sitting outside while you are away may be inconvenient even if the carrier allows it. Choose a receiving arrangement you can use, and confirm that the carrier has accepted the instruction rather than merely saving a general preference.

Arrange the day before the delivery

Use the latest tracking estimate to plan, but avoid promising a helper that the driver will arrive at a particular minute. Keep the sender's dispatch notice and carrier tracking reference together so you can check for changes without searching through several messages.

Work through these actions:

  • Copy the exact signature service from the shipment details.
  • Confirm the delivery address and current estimated delivery date.
  • Ask a suitable person to be present, with ID when required.
  • If you want digital release, check whether this shipment offers it.
  • Keep the confirmation of any accepted delivery instruction.
  • Agree on what you will do if the delivery date changes.

If you discover that no suitable person can be there, contact the sender or use the available carrier options before the attempted delivery. A delivery-date change or an authorized location change may be possible, but it depends on the package. Check whether the proposed alternative still carries the same signature and identification requirement.

If the first delivery attempt is missed

Read the delivery notice and the tracking update for the next step. Check whether the carrier plans another attempt or gives you a collection or change option. Do not infer a guaranteed number of attempts from someone else's shipment, and do not assume a parcel is ready for pickup simply because the delivery was missed.

If you choose a permitted change, keep the confirmation and verify the new status. A request being submitted is not the same as a completed change. Tell the person who was going to sign if the date or location moves, so they do not wait at the original address unnecessarily.

A missed adult-signature delivery still needs an eligible adult when the handoff happens. Likewise, a failed direct-signature attempt does not convert the parcel into an indirect-signature shipment. Arrange around the requirement shown in the latest instructions.

If the package is marked delivered but you cannot locate it, move to the carrier's missing-delivery process. That is a different problem from planning who will sign. Keep any signature or delivery details the carrier makes available and contact the sender with the shipment reference.

Give the recipient useful notice without spoiling the gift

For a surprise gift, you can say that a parcel needs an adult signature without describing its contents. Confirm the address and a workable date before the sender dispatches it, when possible. If the recipient will be traveling, discuss the delivery arrangement early instead of assuming a neighbor can accept every signature service.

Save the delivery notice to dEssence yourself and ask Tracy to identify the stated signature condition and date. Check the answer against the carrier's notice, then request a reminder to arrange someone to receive it. Tracy does not sign, redirect the shipment or change the sender's service. You check the latest tracking status and arrange the handoff.

FAQ

Can a neighbor sign for my FedEx package?

A neighbor can be an option for FedEx Indirect Signature Required. Direct Signature Required needs someone at the recipient's address. Adult Signature Required adds age and identification requirements; check the shipment before asking a neighbor to receive it.

Can I sign online for a FedEx direct-signature package?

No. FedEx does not accept an electronic signature instead of an in-person direct or adult signature. Electronic release is available only for eligible arrangements, including qualifying indirect-signature shipments.

Can UPS leave an adult-signature package without me?

An eligible adult can receive it, but UPS cannot replace the adult signature with unattended digital release. For a U.S. adult-signature delivery, arrange someone 21 or older with valid government-issued photo ID.

Does a signature requirement mean only the named buyer can sign?

Not always. FedEx Direct Signature Required allows a person at the recipient's address to sign. Other restrictions can apply to particular shipments, so check the complete delivery requirement rather than the buyer's name alone.
