Target vs Best Buy Pickup Hold Time: Which Fits Your Schedule?
Target usually holds pickup orders for 3 days; Best Buy for 5. Target groceries have a shorter window. Use the deadline in your ready notice, and request any extension before it expires.

Target vs Best Buy pickup hold time
Best Buy gives an ordinary pickup order more time by default. Target can still fit a later collection if your order qualifies for an extension and you request it in time. The useful comparison is your first available trip against the deadline attached to that particular order.
| Check before choosing | Target | Best Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Standard hold | Usually 3 days | 5 days |
| More time | Eligible orders: request 3 additional days before expiry | Check order details for extension options |
| Fresh or frozen groceries | Until close of the next business day; no extension | Not the grocery exception being compared here |
| Collection details | Ready notice and Order Details | Separate ready email and order details |
| Someone else collecting | Add an alternate pickup person | Designate a pickup person |
| At the counter | Pickup barcode or accepted valid ID | Government-issued photo ID and order number |
Target publishes its rules in Drive Up & Order Pickup help. Best Buy's Store Pickup help specifies the five-day hold and the option to check for an extension. The stores' names describe the comparison; neither retailer sponsors this guide.
Do not turn the longer standard window into a reason to place an order before you have a collection plan. A store across town with inconvenient hours can be harder to reach than a nearer one with a shorter hold. Write down the actual visit you can make before comparing the two.
Start with the ready notice
An order confirmation tells you that checkout was completed. It is not a reason to drive to the store. Wait for the pickup notification, then open the order itself. Read the store address, the items marked ready and the last collection date together.
For a multi-item order, check each item rather than relying on the email subject. Keep a short list of what you intend to collect on this visit. If something remains in preparation, decide whether a second trip is acceptable before leaving home. Do not tell a friend that the entire order is ready when you have only checked one item.
Save the ready notice with the order number visible. If the deadline appears only on the order page, keep that screen too. A screenshot of the original cart may show the product and price but omit the piece of information you need now.
Extend the order before the deadline
Open the order details as soon as you realize the planned trip will not work. Look for the available pickup changes. If an extension is offered, complete the request and check that the revised deadline appears on the order. Keep the confirmation instead of relying on your memory of tapping a button.
An unavailable extension is a decision point. Ask the store about that order, nominate an eligible collector, or consider canceling and ordering again when you can collect. Check the new availability and price before choosing the last option. This guide does not promise that the original offer will still be available.
Make any reminder refer to the revised date. An old reminder can survive after an order changes, and then it is just another notification to dismiss. Label the updated screenshot clearly enough that you can distinguish it from the original.
Give fresh groceries their own trip
A mixed Target basket containing fresh or frozen food should not be planned around the ordinary merchandise hold. Use the shorter grocery deadline shown for your order. If your schedule is uncertain, consider whether those groceries belong in this pickup at all.
Picture ordering a desk lamp and refrigerated ingredients together before a weekend away. You may be happy to leave the lamp waiting, but the food changes the collection problem. Review the actual basket rather than remembering the rule for the item that motivated the order.
For a future order, separating the purchases may make the trips easier to plan. Check what each order offers at checkout; do not assume that splitting a basket guarantees a particular hold, pickup time or stock level.
If another person will collect it
Use the retailer's designated pickup-person option. Forwarding a screenshot is useful for coordination, but it does not itself authorize that person to take the order. Have the collector check their own identification and the order information before traveling.
Best Buy says a person named on a contract must be present for phones or devices with plans. Treat those purchases separately from an ordinary boxed item. If you are unsure about the order type, resolve the question with the store before asking somebody to make the trip.
A manufacturer's checkout can also have its own process. Frigidaire's retail-partner pickup instructions, which include Best Buy, tell buyers to name the collector, wait for readiness and bring photo ID and the ready email. Follow the instructions for the checkout you actually used.
Send your collector one compact message: store address, which items to collect, the deadline and where to find the order number. Ask them to confirm the trip. Do not make them search a long conversation for an address while they are standing outside a different branch.
Check the trip before leaving
- Confirm that the order is still ready and has not been canceled.
- Check the exact store address and the pickup counter or curbside instructions.
- Check that the store will be open when you arrive.
- Bring the required barcode, order information and identification.
- Confirm that the named pickup person matches the person traveling.
- Check the package dimensions if the purchase may be difficult to carry.
For a bulky purchase, the practical limit may be transport rather than the hold period. Measure the available space in your vehicle and check who will help you load or carry it. A successful visit ends with the item coming home, not with discovering that the box cannot fit.
If the store is about to close, do not treat the remaining calendar time as usable collection time. Choose an earlier visit where possible, particularly when you need help with a large item.
Hand off the reminder, then check the order
You can send the ready-notice screenshot to Tracy in dEssence through the web app or Telegram. Ask her to identify the pickup deadline and remind you before the visit you have chosen. Check the extracted date against the order, and confirm the reminder was created.
You still request the extension, change the collector and check the current order status yourself. If the store sends a replacement notice, share the updated information and revise the reminder. Tracy does not enter your retail account or read your inbox to discover the change.
If the pickup window has already expired
Check the order status before traveling. A product still appearing on the store's website does not mean your reserved order remains available. If it has been canceled, ask about the payment status and decide whether you still want to reorder.
Keep the canceled order separate from any replacement. Record the new order number and discard the old pickup reminder once you no longer need it. This prevents a familiar mistake: arriving with the barcode for the order that ended.
FAQ
How long do Target and Best Buy hold pickup orders?
Target usually holds them for three days and Best Buy for five. The exceptions and extension options above matter; use your order's displayed deadline for the trip.
Can I extend a Target grocery pickup?
No, Target excludes fresh and frozen grocery orders from extensions. Arrange collection within the grocery window shown on your order.
Can someone else pick up my Best Buy order?
Yes, for eligible orders when you designate them as the pickup person. Check any special requirements for your purchase before sending them.
Should I go to the store after the order confirmation?
No. Wait until the order is marked ready for pickup, then check the location and collection instructions. The confirmation alone is not a readiness notice.
