Rewind became Limitless, Meta bought Limitless, and the recording stopped. Here are the honest options for people whose memory lived in a screen recorder, grouped by what each one actually costs you.

The useful Rewind AI alternatives fall into three groups: tools that record your screen, tools that preserve conversations, and tools that search things you deliberately save. Choose by what you actually retrieved from Rewind. Replacing an occasional meeting lookup with continuous desktop capture can add a large archive you do not need.

What actually stopped working

Rewind's company became Limitless, which was acquired by Meta. The official Limitless announcement distinguishes several changes that are easy to collapse into one shutdown story.

Its notice says the latest Rewind update disables screen and audio capture starting December 19, 2025. It also says recording through the Limitless Desktop App and Web App is no longer available, while previously recorded meetings remain accessible throughout 2026 for continuing eligible customers.

The same notice lists regional service withdrawals and a December 19, 2025 download deadline for affected accounts, followed by deletion. Consequently, an old export instruction is not evidence that your account still has recoverable data today. These distinctions are set out in the official Limitless acquisition announcement and customer questions.

Treat your existing archive and your next tool as separate jobs. Locate whatever you already exported or backed up, then test a replacement with new material.

Choose Rewind AI alternatives by the retrieval job

Start by writing three real retrieval requests: “the error message from Tuesday,” “what we agreed about delivery,” and “the shelving idea I liked.” Assign each to screen history, audio, or saved material.

Also identify the artifact you need back. A transcript may preserve the words while losing who pointed at which part of a screen.

Screenpipe: searchable desktop history

Screenpipe captures desktop context, including screen information and audio, and makes that history searchable. Its official site describes raw history as local by default and offers controls to exclude apps, windows, and URLs. That makes it a plausible starting point if Rewind helped you retrieve things you had never thought to bookmark.

The practical work is configuring the boundary. Before your first full day, exclude sensitive applications and test a harmless page to see what is captured. Check where the history lives, how you delete a period, and which permissions the app requests.

Local storage and local AI processing are different claims. If you connect a cloud model or an external agent, inspect what context that connection can receive. Keeping raw recordings on the computer does not establish that every later query stays there.

Expect a growing local archive and some resource use. Measure both on your own machine; a vendor's example workload is not a dependable prediction for yours.

OBS Studio: record a selected session

OBS Studio works when you need a recording of a particular demonstration, troubleshooting session, or presentation. You decide when capture starts and ends. It does not, by itself, turn every visible sentence into a searchable personal memory.

In Settings > Output, set Recording Path to a folder you can find again. Choose a recording format and make a short test before recording something important. OBS's Standard Recording Output Guide recommends MKV because an interrupted recording is less likely to lose the entire file; File > Remux Recordings can convert it for workflows that need MP4.

Check the preview and audio meters, then play the test back. A moving microphone meter does not establish that the other person's audio was recorded.

The storage tradeoff is straightforward: you keep video files and must name, index, and back them up. Use a filename containing the date and subject, plus a short text note with useful timestamps. That adds manual work, but keeps capture tied to an identifiable purpose.

Otter: preserve the conversation

Otter is a better category fit when your recurring question is about something someone said. A transcript provides searchable words without requiring a video archive of your whole working day. It cannot retrieve a webpage you silently skimmed outside the recorded conversation.

Make a short sample recording with names, numbers, and one unfamiliar technical term. Search those terms afterward and compare the transcript with the audio. A polished summary can conceal an incorrect name or deadline.

Otter's Export conversations help article documents the conversation menu > Export route. It identifies TXT as the text export format available to Basic users, with additional formats and settings tied to paid access. Test export on the plan you intend to use before accumulating months of calls.

This is a cloud service choice. Review recording access, sharing, retention, and deletion controls. If local processing is essential, use a local audio recorder and an on-device transcription tool whose processing location you have verified, then keep the original audio beside the transcript.

Compare the full cost

Compare costs using the same workload: your expected recording hours, retained history, transcription use, and number of questions. Check current owner-published plans for each shortlisted tool; a purchase price may exclude model usage, hosted processing, or storage.

For local capture, measure one representative hour and inspect the resulting folder size. Multiply it by your planned hours and retention period, then leave room for indexes and backups. This is your estimate, not a universal disk requirement.

For cloud transcripts, check recording limits, import limits, and whether the export format you need requires payment. For manual saving, count useful items and retrieval messages. A lower subscription price can still produce more work if you spend time preparing files or correcting transcripts.

Test retrieval before committing

Run the same retrieval test on three separate days. Capture one meeting decision, one visual reference, and one technical explanation using the workflow you are considering. The next day, search using the imperfect words you remember rather than copied titles.

Record whether you found the original, whether the answer was accurate, and how much correction or filing was needed. Then repeat with the network disconnected if offline access matters to you.

Choose the tool that succeeds on your actual requests with acceptable capture effort. Continuous recording is valuable when forgotten context is the problem. Deliberate saving is often sufficient when the valuable references are already recognizable at the moment you encounter them.
