How to Return a Gift Without a Receipt, and What to Ask the Giver For
To return a gift without a receipt, bring the item and an ID to the store and expect store credit, not cash. A gift receipt, the order number or the card the giver paid with usually gets you more, so ask for one first.

You can usually return a gift without a receipt, but expect store credit rather than money back, and bring an ID. With nothing at all, Target, for example, gives a merchandise return card. A little help from the giver changes that: a gift receipt, a packing slip or the order number usually gets you a gift card for the full price, and some stores can look up the purchase from the card the giver used. One catch most guides skip: the return window counts from the day the giver bought it, not the day you opened it.
What happens when you return a gift with no receipt
Stores handle receipt-free returns in roughly the same way, with their own details:
- You get store credit, not cash. The refund usually goes on a gift card or a store credit card for that store.
- The amount may be lower. Some stores refund the lowest price the item sold for recently, not what the giver paid. After holiday sales, that can be a lot less.
- You need an ID. Some stores ask for a driver's license and keep count of receipt-free returns. After too many, they can say no.
- The item has to be in returnable shape. Unopened, with tags, in the box when the store requires it.
Target is a clear example. Its returns help page says that with a gift receipt or packing slip, you get a refund on a Target GiftCard. Without the gift receipt or packing slip, you may receive a merchandise return card in store. Target also says returns without a receipt may be limited.

What to ask the giver for
It feels awkward, but most people would rather you return a gift than keep something that does not fit. Ask simply: "I love that you thought of me. It is a size too small, could you send me the gift receipt?" Here is what helps, best first:
1. A gift receipt
A gift receipt shows the item and lets the store refund the price paid, without showing it to you. Many stores can send one by text or email after the purchase. Target even suggests asking the giver to send a gift receipt by text or email if there was none in the box.
2. The order number
For online gifts, the order number is often enough. Amazon's Return a Gift page says you can find the 17-digit order number on the packing slip or the digital gift receipt. The item has to have been marked as a gift at checkout. If you have neither the order number nor the tracking number, the person who bought it needs to contact Amazon. As the recipient, you get the refund as an Amazon gift card balance.
3. The card they paid with
Some stores can look up a receipt from the payment card. At Target, the credit or debit card used for the purchase lets the store attempt a receipt lookup, but the giver would have to come along or return it themselves. This is the last resort.
4. The purchase date
Even if they cannot find the receipt, ask roughly when they bought it. That tells you how much of the return window is left.
The return window starts before you open the gift
Return windows count from the purchase date. If the giver bought your sweater on Black Friday, November 27, a 30-day window ends on December 27, two days after Christmas. Some stores extend windows for holiday purchases, and some do not. The gift receipt shows the date; without it, ask the giver.
That is why the first week after the holidays matters. Try things on, decide, and if something goes back, do it while there is still time left.
How to return a gift without a receipt, step by step
- Check the box and the bag. Gift receipts and packing slips are often folded into the packaging or tucked under the tissue.
- Ask the giver for a gift receipt, the order number or at least the purchase date.
- Read the store's return page for the item's window and whether it needs to be unopened.
- Bring the item, any tags and your ID to the store, or start an online gift return if you have the order number.
- Ask what you will get before you hand it over: store credit, a gift card, or an exchange.
If you end up with a store gift card, it becomes one more thing with a balance to use. Our guide to keeping track of gift cards covers that part.
Let Tracy keep the window
The return is easy once you decide. The hard part is deciding before the window closes, during the busiest weeks of the year. Tracy, the assistant in dEssence, keeps the date for you.
Take a photo of the gift receipt, the packing slip or even the tag, and send it to Tracy in Telegram, Chrome or on the web. If the giver texts you the purchase date, add it. She keeps the store, the item and the date. Ask her to remind you three days before the window ends, and she does.
She does not contact stores or start returns for you. She keeps the details in one place and brings them back in time.
Frequently asked questions
Can you return a gift without a receipt?
Usually, yes, but you will likely get store credit rather than money back, and you may need an ID. Target, for example, gives a merchandise return card without a gift receipt or packing slip. Each store sets its own limits.
How do I return an Amazon gift without the order number?
If you have the tracking number, contact Amazon with it. If you have neither the order number nor the tracking number, the person who bought the gift needs to contact Amazon. Gift returns are refunded to your Amazon gift card balance.
Will the giver find out if I return their gift?
With a gift receipt or a gift return, the refund goes to you as store credit or a gift card, not back to the giver's card. Whether the store notifies the buyer depends on the store.
How long do you have to return a Christmas gift?
The window counts from the day the giver bought it, not from Christmas. Some stores extend windows for holiday purchases. Check the store's policy and ask the giver for the purchase date.
What should I ask for if I want to return a gift?
A gift receipt is best, then the order number for online gifts, then at least the purchase date. Most givers would rather you exchange something than keep it unused.
