Find a YouTube Video You Watched but Did Not Save

To find a YouTube video you watched, search your watch history. On a computer, open History on youtube.com; in the app, tap your profile photo, then Settings and Manage all history. Search one word from the title, or pick the date.

Find a YouTube Video You Watched but Did Not Save

You watched it once, half-listening, on a Tuesday. You did not save it, did not like it, did not subscribe. Now you need that video back and all you have is a face, a colour and a fragment of one sentence.

The useful part: YouTube keeps several separate trails of what you did, and they rarely fail at the same time. Here is how to find a YouTube video you watched, in the order that works fastest, with an honest line under each step about what will show up and what will not. Further down: how to find part 2 of a video you just finished, and what still works for a video you watched years ago.

Start where the trail is strongest: watch history

Watch history is the only list written automatically while you watched, so it does not depend on you having done anything clever at the time. On desktop it sits in the left sidebar of youtube.com under History. The detail people miss is the field at the top of that page: it searches your history only, so one common word like "sourdough" or "Kyoto" gives you a short list instead of ten million results.

Two honest limits. Watch history only records time when you were signed in with history switched on, and your Google Account carries an auto-delete setting for it, commonly three, eighteen or thirty-six months, so anything older than your window has already been cleared. YouTube's documentation on viewing, deleting and turning watch history on or off tells you which of those applies before you spend an hour scrolling.

How to search YouTube history on your phone

In the YouTube app, tap your profile photo, then Settings and Manage all history. Tap Search and type one word you remember from the title or the channel name. If you remember roughly when you watched it, tap Calendar instead and pick that date range. This is the route YouTube's help documents for both Android and iPhone.

On a computer, the same list sits in My Activity: open YouTube History, then Manage history, then Search. Either way, the search covers only what you watched while signed in to that account with history on. If it finds nothing, check the account before you give up, as described further down.

If you remember the day but not the title

Your Google Account keeps a dated activity view that includes YouTube, and it beats the YouTube page when your memory is anchored to a moment rather than a word. Go to your Google Account, open Data & privacy, scroll to History settings, choose YouTube History, then Manage all activity. Filter by date and read the day in order: no keyword needed, and watched items and searches appear side by side. This is what rescues the "it was the evening I was cooking" case.

If you remember what you typed, not what you watched

Sometimes the search you ran is stickier than the video you picked. Search history is stored separately and can be read on its own, so a half-remembered query like "best budget monitor arm" narrows the field even when nothing about the video comes back. YouTube documents where to find and manage that list in its help article on viewing or deleting your YouTube search history. Run the query again in the same wording, and the thumbnail you clicked is usually near the top of the results you saw at the time.

How to find part 2 of a video you just watched

Start at the end of the video you just finished. Creators can put the next video or a playlist on the end screen, which shows in the last 5 to 20 seconds as clickable tiles. End screens do not appear in a mobile browser, and viewers can hide them, so replay the ending in the app or on a computer. Then open the description and the pinned comment and look for a link, and check whether the channel has a playlist for the series.

If the creator linked nothing, open the channel, search it for a word from the title plus "part 2", and look at the newest uploads. Part 2 of a recent video may simply not be out yet. For a Short, look just below the channel handle: creators can attach a related video from their channel there, as YouTube's help on related videos in Shorts explains.

How to find a YouTube video you watched years ago

You can find it only if your history still reaches back that far. YouTube keeps watch history until your auto-delete setting clears it. Check the setting in My Activity under YouTube History, Manage history, Auto-delete. If the window is shorter than the time since you watched, history no longer has the video.

When the window is long enough, skip the scrolling. Use Calendar in the app or the date filter in My Activity to jump to the right year, then search one word. Videos you watched while history was paused never entered the list, whatever the setting says.

When history has nothing, the older trails are the ones you made yourself: your Liked videos, any playlist you added it to, and chats or emails where you sent the link to someone. If you remember the creator, their channel's back catalogue is the last place to look. Films a friend mentioned work the same way, and here is how to find a movie when you forgot the title.

Check the device and the account you were actually on

A surprising share of "my history is empty" is the wrong account rather than a missing record. Work through these in order:

  • The browser you used. Open history with Ctrl+H (Cmd+Y in Safari), search for youtube.com/watch and narrow by date. The browser logged the page even when YouTube did not log the account.
  • The second Chrome profile. Work, personal and a shared family profile each keep separate histories and separate YouTube accounts.
  • The TV or console app. These are often signed into an old account someone set up once; check the name in the profile corner.
  • A child's tablet. If YouTube Kids was involved, the record is in that profile, not yours.

Likes, playlists and the channel

If you reacted at all, that is faster than history. Open Liked videos from the sidebar and scroll it by eye, then check Watch later and any playlist you keep. If the creator is what you remember, open the channel's Videos tab and sort by date around the period you watched; channel pages have their own search field, which is the quickest way through a long back catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I see the videos I have watched on YouTube?

In your watch history. On a computer, click History in the left sidebar of youtube.com. In the app, tap your profile photo, then Settings and Manage all history.

Can you find a YouTube video you watched when you were not signed in?

Sometimes, through your browser. YouTube keeps a separate watch history while you are signed out, but its History page says that history isn't viewable when signed out: you can only pause or clear it there. If you watched in a browser, search the browser's own history for youtube.com/watch.

Why is a video missing from my YouTube watch history?

Videos you watch while history is paused never appear in it. The other common reasons are a different account and an auto-delete setting that already cleared that period.

Can you search YouTube history by date?

Yes. In the app, open Manage all history and tap Calendar to pick a date range. On a computer, open My Activity and filter by date.

The fix that stops this repeating

Every route above depends on a record someone else keeps for you, on their schedule, with their retention window. The one part in your hands is a save made in your own words at the moment you watch: one line about what the video was and why you cared. That is the half dEssence handles. You save the link from the Chrome extension, from Telegram or from the web app and say what it was, the lamp restoration guy for the hallway project, then ask for it months later the way you would describe it to a friend.
