Spring Semester Tuition Due Date: the December Bill and the Hold
Each college sets its spring semester tuition due date. For spring 2027, most schools we checked want payment January 4 to 12. The bill often posts in December, and an unpaid balance can put a hold on registration.

Every college sets its own spring semester tuition due date, and the bill usually arrives while students are finishing finals or already home for break. At five schools whose bursar pages we checked on October 24, 2026, payment for spring 2027 is due between January 4 and February 5, 2027, and where the page gives a billing date, it is usually in December. Miss it and many schools add a late fee and a financial hold, which can stop you registering for classes. Before break starts, it helps to find four dates on your own school's bursar page.
Spring 2027 due dates at five schools
These are examples from the schools' own bursar pages, checked on October 24, 2026. Your school's date may be different, so use these to see the pattern, then check yours.

The pattern: where a school gives a billing date, the bill usually shows up in December, often in a student portal rather than in the mail, and the due date lands in the first two weeks of January at most of these schools. That is a few days after New Year and sometimes before classes start.
What a hold does
A hold is a flag on your student account. With a financial or bursar hold, the school may block things until the balance is paid. On the pages we checked:
- University of Louisville: if payment is not received by the due date, a late fee and financial hold may be assessed. Students on financial hold become ineligible for further registration.
- University of Southern Indiana: a balance not covered by a payment plan after the due date is past due and results in a hold, which prevents registering for future classes and charging to the student account at the Campus Store.
- Virginia Tech: a late payment fee and hold may apply.
Some schools also tie holds to official transcripts. Louisville, for example, has a form to request a temporary release of a financial transcript hold. Ask your bursar what your school's hold blocks.
The registration part matters most in spring, because that is when students sign up for the summer and fall terms. A hold that starts in January can still be there when registration opens. Our guide on when you can register for classes explains how registration windows work.
Four dates to find before break
Open your school's bursar or student accounts page, usually under "billing," "due dates" or "payment deadlines," and write down:
- When the spring bill posts. Often in December, in the student portal. Some schools send an email when it is ready, as Manhattan University does.
- The payment due date. This is the date the payment must be received, not sent. Louisville says payment must be received and processed by its due date.
- When the hold or late fee starts. Usually right after the due date. Some schools say "no grace period," as CU Boulder does.
- The last day to set up a payment plan. Plans often have to be set up each semester. Louisville says so directly. CU Boulder's spring plans open December 8.
Two things to check on the bill itself: whether your financial aid has been applied or is listed as anticipated, and whether a scholarship you expect is on it. Louisville says the amount due is total charges less anticipated aid. If something is missing, December is a better time to ask than the week classes start. If you have scholarship renewals coming up too, our scholarship deadline tracker helps keep them in one list.
Where Tracy fits
Tracy, the assistant in dEssence, does not see your student portal or bank. You send her a screenshot of the bursar page, a bill email pasted into Telegram or iMessage, or the page saved from Chrome. She keeps the due date, reminds you to check the bill and to pay before it, and keeps the screenshot so you can find the exact wording later.
Tuition is one bill among many. Our guide to keeping track of bill due dates shows a five-minute weekly routine for all of them.
Frequently asked questions
When is spring semester tuition due?
Each college sets its own date. For spring 2027, the schools we checked want payment between January 4 and February 5, 2027, with most around January 11 or 12. Check your bursar page.
When does the spring tuition bill come out?
Often in December. Manhattan University posts spring 2027 eBills on December 1, and the University of Southern Indiana bills priority registered students on December 14, 2026.
What happens if I pay tuition late?
At the schools we checked, a late fee and a financial hold. At Louisville and Southern Indiana, the hold stops you from registering for more classes until the balance is paid.
Can I set up a payment plan for spring semester?
Many of the schools we checked do, often set up each semester. Louisville says plans must be set up for each semester, and CU Boulder's spring plans open December 8.
Does a bursar hold block my transcript?
At some schools. Louisville, for example, has a form to request a temporary release of a financial transcript hold. Ask your bursar what your hold blocks.
