Snapchat Memories Are Disappearing: Back Them Up First

If your Snapchat Memories disappeared, keep the original phone signed in while you check backup status. A blank grid, an unfinished upload, a different account, and a deleted Snap need different responses. Start by protecting what still opens, then export the account archive.

Snapchat Memories disappeared: check where they were saved

Swipe up from the camera screen to open Memories. Check the account username on your profile, especially if you have more than one account. Reinstalling the app does not create a new account, but signing into another one can make the library look empty.

Memories holds the Snaps you saved there. A recent item can still be waiting on the phone for its upload to finish; seeing its thumbnail is not proof that a cloud copy exists.

My Eyes Only is a passcode-protected area within Memories. Swipe across to its tab and unlock it using the existing passcode. Moving something there changes where you find it. Resetting a forgotten passcode deletes the existing protected contents; it is not a recovery method.

Camera Roll shows media from your phone. Snapchat does not back up that entire gallery to Memories. Open Apple Photos or your Android gallery separately and check whether the missing image is there. A phone copy and a Snapchat copy are separate assets.

When missing Snapchat Memories will not load

If backup is complete but thumbnails will not open, check the connection, update Snapchat, and restart the phone. Free space by moving unrelated downloads elsewhere. Avoid using Android's system-level Clear storage or Clear data as a troubleshooting shortcut: that removes app data, unlike clearing a cache.

Check any storage notice inside your account, too. Snap's Introducing Memories Storage Plans announcement introduced a 5 GB threshold and 12 months of temporary storage for excess Memories. Read your own account's notice for the applicable timing; the announcement does not establish that every missing photo was deleted for exceeding storage.

Write down the approximate missing dates and whether the affected items were recent uploads or older, previously accessible files. That distinction is more useful when contacting support than repeatedly reinstalling.

Export your Snapchat Memories backup

Use a computer with room for the download, extracted archive, and media files. Snapchat's How do I download my data from Snapchat? documents this route and says it aims to deliver exports within seven days; larger requests can take longer.

Leave the download running until it finishes. If the browser requests permission for multiple downloads, allow it for the authenticated export session. If a large download fails, try another browser or request smaller date ranges and keep them in clearly dated folders.

Before deleting anything, open several older images, a recent image, and multiple videos. Disconnect from the internet and check the downloaded files again. An HTML page full of links is not an independent media backup. Keep the original ZIP and copy the verified files to another storage location.

Save important Snaps to your gallery next time

Return to Settings → My App → Memories → Save Button and choose Memories & Camera Roll. On layouts without My App, open Memories directly. Take a harmless test Snap, tap Save, and confirm it appears in both places. This changes the destination when you save; it does not copy your old library retroactively.

Check the phone's photo-backup service separately. A gallery copy can disappear with a lost phone if it has no other backup. For irreplaceable images, keep an additional copy outside your everyday photo library and check that it opens.

Keep useful context with the archive: the trip name, approximate date, and names of places. A folder called September weekend is easier to recognize than several hundred unfamiliar filenames. Preserve original files before renaming or sorting them.
