Scholastic Book Fair eWallet Unused Money: What Happens After the Fair

Scholastic Book Fair eWallet unused money stays in the student's eWallet after the fair. Check the balance before adding more money, then choose whether to keep it for another fair or use one of Scholastic's other options.

Start with the balance email, then open your account

The books have come home, but the email says there is still money left. Before you top up for the next fair, open your Scholastic account and look at the child's current balance. An email records what was there when it was sent; a later purchase or transfer may have changed it.

Scholastic's current eWallet guide says the same wallet carries over from year to year. It also says account holders receive an email about their remaining balance after the fair. You do not need to spend the money immediately just because the school has packed away the book displays.

Keep the email until you have checked the account. Note which child it names and which school fair it refers to. If two adults funded purchases, establish whose Scholastic account holds the wallet before anyone creates another one. A payment receipt and a wallet balance answer different questions: one shows money added, the other shows what is available now.

What you can do with leftover eWallet money

The eWallet terms, updated July 16, 2026, describe several uses for the remaining balance. Leave it for a future Scholastic fair, transfer it between your children's wallets within your account, shop with Scholastic online, move it to your Scholastic eGift Card balance, or contribute to a participating school's Share the Fair fund.

Choose based on the next real use. If another fair is coming, leaving the balance alone may be enough. If a sibling needs books sooner, review the transfer option in your account. If you would rather buy a particular book online, check the item and payment options before moving funds.

Do not treat the balance as cash returned to your bank. The terms describe deposits as nonrefundable and not redeemable for cash, except where law requires otherwise. If you believe there was a billing error, contact Scholastic about that transaction rather than trying to solve it by transferring the balance.

Keep the wallet; confirm the student details

A continuing wallet does not mean every school detail stays correct. Scholastic's terms require the student's name, grade and educator information to be reconfirmed each school year for use at the fair register. This is especially easy to overlook after a move or a teacher change.

Before the next shopping day, work through these checks:

  • Sign in to the account holding the child's wallet.
  • Read the current balance before adding funds.
  • Confirm the student's name, grade and teacher for this school year.
  • Decide what to do with the balance and record any transfer you make.
  • Use the school's current announcement to identify the next shopping day.

Open an old school handout carefully. Earlier instructions may describe converting unused funds into an eGift balance and creating another wallet. The current family guide describes a continuing wallet. If your account shows an older eGift balance, inspect that balance separately instead of assuming the email is wrong or the money disappeared.

Work out the top-up before someone adds money

Suppose, as a household example, you choose a $20 spending limit and the account shows $7 left. The additional amount would be $13. If the balance were $0, the top-up for that same total would be $20. Those are example amounts, not Scholastic prices or a recommended budget. Check how your school's checkout handles the final total before settling on an amount.

Tell anyone helping to fund the purchase what you have already counted. Otherwise a grandparent may add the full planned budget while you do the same. A brief note such as “There is already $7 in this wallet; we are planning $20 total” is more useful than sending a funding link without context.

If you transfer funds, check both balances afterward. Write down the source child, receiving child and amount. That small record makes a later question easier to resolve, especially if the children shop on different days. Do not transfer money merely to tidy up the account when both children already have a use for their own balances.

Give Tracy the follow-up before the next fair

You can upload a screenshot of the balance email and the new fair announcement to dEssence, then ask Tracy to remind you to check the wallet before your child's shopping day. Include the date and time you want the reminder. Tracy can work from the material you send and help identify the preparation steps.

For example: “These are the old balance email and the new fair notice. Remind me the evening before shopping to check the balance and confirm the teacher.” Read the extracted date against the notice before relying on it. If the school changes the day, send the replacement notice yourself.

Tracy does not sign in to Scholastic, inspect a live wallet or transfer money. The amount in a saved screenshot is a reference, not a current account lookup. You still open the wallet and decide how much, if anything, to add.

FAQ

Does Scholastic eWallet money disappear after the fair?

No. Scholastic's current guide says the wallet and its unused balance remain available after the fair. Check the account if an older email and the current balance differ.

Do I have to create a new eWallet every year?

No. The current system keeps the wallet, while requiring confirmation of the student's name, grade and educator each school year. Do that check before the next fair.

Can I move the balance to another child?

Yes. The current terms allow transfers between children's eWallets within the same parent or guardian account. Check which wallet you selected and confirm both balances afterward.

Can I get unused funds back on my credit card?

Generally, no. The terms make deposits nonrefundable and exclude cash redemption except where law requires otherwise. Ask Scholastic directly about an erroneous charge or a disputed transaction.
