Snapchat Memories Disappearing? Back Them Up First

Snapchat Memories disappear when they never finished backing up, when you are on another account, or when they were deleted. Check Backup Progress in Settings first. Going over 5 GB does not delete them: from 2027 older ones get archived.

Snapchat Memories Disappearing? Back Them Up First

If your Snapchat Memories disappeared, keep the original phone signed in while you check backup status. A blank grid, an unfinished upload, a different account, and a deleted Snap need different responses. Start by protecting what still opens, then export the account archive. Going over Snapchat's 5 GB storage limit does not delete anything; the storage section below explains what changes in January 2027.

Snapchat Memories disappeared: check where they were saved

Swipe up from the camera screen to open Memories. Check the account username on your profile, especially if you have more than one account. Reinstalling the app does not create a new account, but signing into another one can make the library look empty.

Memories holds the Snaps you saved there. A recent item can still be waiting on the phone for its upload to finish; seeing its thumbnail is not proof that a cloud copy exists.

My Eyes Only is a passcode-protected area within Memories. Swipe across to its tab and unlock it using the existing passcode. Moving something there changes where you find it. Resetting a forgotten passcode deletes the existing protected contents; it is not a recovery method.

Camera Roll shows media from your phone. Snapchat does not back up that entire gallery to Memories. Open Apple Photos or your Android gallery separately and check whether the missing image is there. A phone copy and a Snapchat copy are separate assets.

Can you recover Snapchat Memories?

Only the ones that finished backing up. Snapchat Support says it cannot recover Memories that were deleted or never completed their backup: when you delete a Snap from Memories, Snapchat's servers erase it as soon as possible. If all of your Memories vanished at once, check the account first, as described above, because a different login also shows an empty grid.

Before you write anything off, run Snapchat's own fix for Memories that look missing. Update the app, open Settings, tap Clear Cache and confirm, then switch the phone off for one minute. Snapchat says clearing its cache does not delete Memories, Snaps or Chats. If the Memories still do not appear after that, Snapchat's help treats them as lost.

When missing Snapchat Memories will not load

If backup is complete but thumbnails will not open, check the connection, update Snapchat, and restart the phone. Free space by moving unrelated downloads elsewhere. Avoid using Android's system-level Clear storage or Clear data as a troubleshooting shortcut: that removes app data, unlike clearing a cache.

Check any storage notice inside your account, too. Snap's Introducing Memories Storage Plans announcement introduced a 5 GB threshold and 12 months of temporary storage for excess Memories. Read your own account's notice for the applicable timing; the announcement does not establish that every missing photo was deleted for exceeding storage.

Write down the approximate missing dates and whether the affected items were recent uploads or older, previously accessible files. That distinction is more useful when contacting support than repeatedly reinstalling.

Is Snapchat deleting Memories over 5 GB?

No. Snapchat's storage help says it will not delete your Memories because you do not buy more storage. The free allowance is 5 GB. Starting in January 2027, Memories that are more than a year old and fall outside your oldest 5 GB get archived: they stay on Snapchat and show as thumbnails, but you need a storage plan to open, edit or share them. Memories from the last year and your oldest 5 GB stay open either way, and Snapchat says it will warn you in the app before anything changes.

So a photo that went missing in 2026 was not removed for storage. To see how much space you use, open Settings → My App → Memories and look under Cloud Storage. If you are over 5 GB and do not want a plan, download your older Memories with the export below before January 2027.

Export your Snapchat Memories backup

Use a computer with room for the download, extracted archive, and media files. Snapchat's How do I download my data from Snapchat? documents this route and says it aims to deliver exports within seven days; larger requests can take longer.

Leave the download running until it finishes. If the browser requests permission for multiple downloads, allow it for the authenticated export session. If a large download fails, try another browser or request smaller date ranges and keep them in clearly dated folders.

Before deleting anything, open several older images, a recent image, and multiple videos. Disconnect from the internet and check the downloaded files again. An HTML page full of links is not an independent media backup. Keep the original ZIP and copy the verified files to another storage location.

Will you lose Snapchat Memories on a new phone?

Not if they finished backing up. Backed-up Memories belong to your account, so they load on the new phone once you log in with the same username. Check Backup Progress on the old phone first, under Settings → My App → Memories: it has to say Complete. A count of Snaps remaining, or No Network Connection, means some Memories exist only on the old phone, and Snapchat says a backup that did not finish cannot be recovered after you log out or move to another device.

Camera Roll photos do not travel with Snapchat. Snapchat does not back up your phone's camera roll, so move those with your phone's own photo backup, or import the ones you want under Settings → My App → Memories → Import Snaps from Camera Roll before you switch.

Save important Snaps to your gallery next time

Return to Settings → My App → Memories → Save Button and choose Memories & Camera Roll. On layouts without My App, open Memories directly. Take a harmless test Snap, tap Save, and confirm it appears in both places. This changes the destination when you save; it does not copy your old library retroactively.

Check the phone's photo-backup service separately. A gallery copy can disappear with a lost phone if it has no other backup. For irreplaceable images, keep an additional copy outside your everyday photo library and check that it opens.

Keep useful context with the archive: the trip name, approximate date, and names of places. A folder called September weekend is easier to recognize than several hundred unfamiliar filenames. Preserve original files before renaming or sorting them.

Frequently asked questions

Where do Snaps go after they disappear?

Snapchat's servers delete them. One-on-one and group Snaps are deleted after every recipient has viewed them, and unopened Snaps after 31 days, according to Snapchat's deletion rules. A Snap stays only if someone saved it in the chat or you saved it to Memories.

Why does Snapchat say my Camera Roll isn't backed up?

Because it is not. Snapchat backs up Memories, not your phone's camera roll, and the Camera Roll tab only shows what is stored on the phone. To add a photo to the backup, import it under Settings → My App → Memories → Import Snaps from Camera Roll.

How do I know if my Snapchat Memories are backed up?

Open Settings → My App → Memories and look at Backup Progress. Complete means everything is uploaded. A number of Snaps remaining, or No Network Connection, means the backup is not finished, so connect to Wi-Fi or a good mobile signal and wait until it says Complete.
