Costco Price Adjustment Policy: The 30 Day Rules Explained

Costco gives you the difference when an item you bought drops in price within 30 days. Ask at the Returns counter of the warehouse where you bought it, or use the Request a Price Match form for costco.com orders. Other stores do not count.

Costco Price Adjustment Policy: The 30 Day Rules Explained

The Costco price adjustment policy is worth checking when something you already bought gets cheaper. Start with the receipt: where you bought it determines where you should ask. Then compare the exact item and the price you actually paid. This guide covers U.S. purchases, with a practical way to keep the paperwork and deadlines from becoming another unfinished errand.

Costco price adjustment policy: what the 30 days cover

Costco's official guidance permits eligible non-resale purchases with price reductions within 30 days of purchase. Dated promotions also require submission during the promotion. Competitor prices and warehouse prices for online purchases are excluded; precious metals are ineligible. Promotional quantity limits apply. Installed projects and special-order kiosks have separate terms; tires and wheels may qualify. Online purchases use the request form; warehouse purchases go to the original location's Returns counter. Costco retains discretion to refuse requests. See Price Match - Costco.com Orders.

For warehouse timing or an unusual category, confirm the applicable terms at that counter. Do not substitute a return deadline for an adjustment deadline.

Can you get a Costco price adjustment after 30 days?

No. Under Costco's posted policy, the price has to drop within 30 days of the date you bought the item. There is no 60 day window and no longer period for members. For an item on a dated promotion, the request has to fall inside both the promotion dates and the 30 days, and Costco says requests sent after the promotion ended may be denied.

So check prices on recent purchases in the first few weeks, not at the end of the month. If you spot the lower price on day 25, send the request that day. Costco also keeps the right to deny any request at its discretion.

Costco price adjustment in store vs online

Where you bought the item decides where you ask, and the two channels do not mix. Costco's help center calls this a price match:

  • Warehouse purchase: go to the Returns counter at the Costco where you made the purchase.
  • Costco.com order: use the Request a Price Match button on the help page and fill in the form. Once approved, the credit goes back to your original form of payment, typically within 5 to 10 business days.

A lower warehouse price does not count for an online order. Costco explains that its website prices include shipping and handling that warehouse prices do not. Before you file an online request, check whether the promotional price was already taken off your order.

Costco price adjustments on sale items and Black Friday

Black Friday and holiday savings events are dated promotions, so the shorter of the two clocks applies: the sale has to be running and you have to be inside 30 days of purchase when you ask. If you bought something in early November and it shows up in the Black Friday sale, request the difference while the sale is still on.

Promotional item limits carry over too: if a sale is limited to two per member, you get the difference on up to two units. Resellers only get the promotional price by buying during the promotion. Installed home projects and special order kiosk purchases follow their own promotion rules, so ask the authorized dealer.

Prepare your Costco price adjustment request

Keep a legible receipt photo or the order confirmation, your membership details, the item number and the lower-price evidence together. This is a preparation checklist, not a claim that every document is mandatory. If you have lost the receipt, ask whether staff can identify the purchase before making a special trip.

Photograph the whole receipt first, then the relevant line closely enough to read. Include any discount line beneath the item. For an online order, save the order summary as a PDF using your browser's Print command, or take a screenshot showing the order number, purchase date and item details.

Capture the current offer with its item number, price and promotion dates visible. A cropped price without the product identity creates extra work. Keep the live product address too, so you can reopen the offer while talking to customer service.

For a warehouse visit, bring your membership card, receipt if available and the price evidence. Ask ahead whether anything else is needed, including the original payment method or product. Avoid hauling a television or appliance back simply to ask about its price. Describe the request as a price adjustment and let staff explain the appropriate process.

Calculate the difference before contacting Costco

Imagine a fictional receipt showing a $249.99 appliance with a $30 item discount. Your effective item price is $219.99. If the same appliance is now advertised at $199.99, the potential item-price difference is $20, not $50. Treat that as a working calculation; customer service determines any approved credit and tax treatment.

Separate shipping, installation, accessories and other charges from the item price in your notes. Compare the model number and everything included in the package. Two appliances with similar names might have different attachments or warranties. A cheaper listing is useful evidence only once you understand what changed.

For several units, record the quantity purchased and the quantity you are asking about separately. Do not assume that multiplying the advertised saving by the entire order gives the refundable amount. Also check your own payment record for any credit already issued, so your request does not accidentally count the same saving twice.

If the product page shows a price only after sign-in, compare it while using your own membership account. Record whether the amount requires a code, a multi-item purchase or some other condition. A search-result snippet may show an earlier price or a different variant; use the product page itself for your working comparison.

Keep your evidence private. A receipt can contain details unrelated to the item, and an order confirmation can expose your address. Share documents through the retailer's own customer-service process when requested. If you ask a shopping group for help interpreting a promotion, remove personal information first and share only the product and offer details. You can ask whether two bundles are equivalent without publishing the transaction that identifies you.

Watch the price and remember the deadline

Save the product in dEssence through the Chrome extension, Telegram bot or web app. Then separately set up price watching on that saved thing. Saving alone does not activate watching. Keep the receipt in your own files and use the same item number in its filename so you can connect the two quickly.

dEssence has a free plan that needs no card. To compare it with store alerts and other ways of watching a price, see this guide to tracking prices and restocks.

Verify that watching works for the particular product page. A website check should never be treated as proof of a local warehouse price. If the relevant offer is only visible in person, keep a manual check on your calendar instead. Reopen any detected lower price before submitting a claim.

Set a personal reminder a couple of days before the confirmed last eligible date. That is a planning buffer, not extra time granted by the retailer. If the offer ends sooner, make that earlier date your practical deadline and act when you discover it.

Name the event something actionable: “Check mixer price; receipt in Purchases folder.” Add the product address, item number and request status in the event notes. Use a reminder time when you can actually open the page or visit the counter, rather than midnight after the store has closed.

An easy way to miss the opportunity is to notice a sale, tell yourself you will handle it later, and never collect the receipt. Another is to set one reminder for the purchase deadline while overlooking the offer's end date. Do the evidence capture immediately; it is the smallest part of the job.

After you submit: approval, payment and follow-up

Keep the request marked “submitted” until you receive a decision. Once approved, record the expected amount and the processing estimate provided in the response. Check the relevant payment account and match the posted credit to the approval before marking the task complete.

If the response is unclear, follow up with the original reference and ask one specific question: “Which eligibility condition does this purchase fail?” Include the item number and purchase date again. That is more useful than sending several new requests with slightly different descriptions.

If your deadline has passed, ask what options remain for the actual transaction. Do not plan around a discretionary exception, or assume returning and repurchasing is an equivalent solution. Before considering a return, establish its separate conditions, possible costs and the availability of a replacement. For a small price difference, the time and transport involved may outweigh the saving.

Frequently asked questions

Does Costco have a 30 day price guarantee?

In effect, yes. If Costco lowers the price of something you bought within 30 days of the purchase date, you can ask for the difference. Costco calls it a price match, and it covers Costco's own prices only.

Does Costco price match other stores?

No. Costco does not price match other businesses or retailers. And for costco.com orders, it does not match its own warehouse prices either.

Does the price adjustment apply to Kirkland Signature items?

Costco's posted policy names no exception for Kirkland Signature, so the same 30 day rule applies. The listed exceptions are precious metals, which are not eligible, and separate terms for installed projects and special order kiosks.

How long does a Costco price adjustment take?

For costco.com orders, credits are typically issued within 5 to 10 business days after approval, to the original form of payment. At the warehouse, the Returns counter handles the request in person.
