Zotero Alternatives in 2026: Free, Open Source and Paid Picks

The best Zotero alternatives are Mendeley and JabRef if you want free (JabRef is open source), Paperpile for Google Docs, EndNote for heavy publishing and ReadCube for reading. If storage is the problem, WebDAV fixes it without switching.

Zotero Alternatives in 2026: Free, Open Source and Paid Picks

Mendeley is the free swap for an ordinary reference library. Paperpile fits people who draft in Google Docs, EndNote fits heavy academic publishing, and ReadCube fits reading and discovery. If you want a free or open source pick, add JabRef to the list. All four still expect you to keep the catalogue tidy yourself.

Start with the problem, not the feature list

Before moving a research library, name the task that frustrates you most. You may need:

  • A simpler interface
  • A better Google Docs workflow
  • Deeper academic-publishing support
  • A more polished PDF reader
  • Easier retrieval from a large collection

These are different jobs. A tool that improves citation formatting may not make old papers easier to recall. A polished reader can still leave you maintaining folders and tags.

Mendeley: a free citation library

Mendeley combines a reference library, PDF reading, annotation and word-processor support. It suits students and researchers who want the conventional reference-manager workflow without paying for the core library.

Choose it to store papers, annotate PDFs, insert citations and keep the library available across devices. Remember that it still expects a maintained catalog. Neglected collections and inconsistent tags can follow you from Zotero.

Paperpile: a Google Docs workflow

Paperpile is a paid reference manager built around Google Docs and Google Workspace. Its web interface and PDF handling reduce the friction between a desktop library and browser-based writing.

It is a focused choice when most of your drafting happens in Google Docs. If Docs is not central to your work, its strongest advantage matters less. Choose from your writing environment outward.

EndNote: established academic publishing

EndNote is a paid desktop reference manager with extensive citation-style support and library sharing. It makes sense for sustained academic writing, complex citation requirements, shared research libraries and formal publishing workflows.

It is heavier than the other options. That weight may be justified for demanding publication work, but it can be unnecessary when you mainly save, annotate and cite papers occasionally.

ReadCube: reading and discovery

ReadCube is a paid option with a polished PDF reader and AI tools that suggest related papers. Its former Papers plans now run as ReadCube Essentials and Plus, according to ReadCube's pricing page, which also offers a 30-day trial of Plus and imports libraries from Zotero, Mendeley and EndNote. Give it more weight when reading papers and discovering related work are the center of your workflow.

Like the other reference managers, it still needs a consistent way to organize or search the material you save.

Free and open source Zotero alternatives

The free Zotero alternatives are Mendeley and JabRef, and JabRef is the open source one. Elsevier describes Mendeley as a free reference manager to store, organize, take notes on, share and cite references, with suggestions of papers based on what you read. JabRef is free, open source software that keeps your library in a plain text file with no vendor lock-in. In practice that file is a BibTeX or BibLaTeX .bib library, so it fits people who write in LaTeX.

Zotero itself is also free and open source, run by an independent nonprofit, according to zotero.org. If price is the only reason to leave, a move costs you migration time and saves you nothing. Switch for a workflow reason: a .bib file as the single source of truth (JabRef) or a different library and reader (Mendeley).

Zotero alternatives for Mac and Linux

On a Mac, the dedicated alternative is Bookends, a paid reference manager for macOS with a companion iOS app. Its buying page asks you to try the free version before you buy a license. On Linux, the strongest alternative is JabRef: its installation guide covers Linux next to Windows and macOS, including a snap package for Ubuntu.

Check whether you need to switch at all. Zotero runs on Mac, Windows and Linux and has iOS and Android apps, per its download page. A platform gap is a real reason to move only if you use a device Zotero does not cover.

Out of Zotero storage? Fix that before you switch

Running out of storage does not require a new reference manager. Each Zotero account gets 300 MB of free Zotero Storage for attached files, and paid plans start at 2 GB for $20 a year, per Zotero's storage page. Syncing your references, notes and tags is free and unlimited; only the attached files count.

The free route is WebDAV. Zotero can sync the files in your personal library through a WebDAV service, and your university or employer may provide one, as Zotero's sync guide explains. Group libraries cannot use WebDAV, so shared PDFs still need Zotero Storage.

Test with real work

Do not evaluate a reference manager with an empty library. Use a small, representative set from an active project:

  • A journal article with complete metadata
  • A PDF with incomplete metadata
  • A source you need to annotate
  • A document that requires citations
  • A paper you remember by its argument rather than its title

Complete the same workflow in every candidate. The final retrieval test matters as much as capture and citation.

Citations and recall are different jobs

A reference manager is the right category for bibliographies, citation styles, word-processor integration and shared academic libraries. Those tasks require structured source records.

Your difficulty may instead be remembering which paper made a particular argument. Folders record where you filed a source, but they do not always match the vague question you ask weeks later. Test each tool using a topic, claim or visual detail, not only exact authors and titles.

You can also keep Zotero for citations and use a separate recall tool. dEssence can hold saved articles, videos, PDFs, screenshots and voice notes, then answer questions from those saves with sources. It does not replace citation styles, bibliography export or word-processor integration.

Migrate one project first

Moving an entire library creates work and makes comparison harder. Keep the original Zotero library intact while testing one active project. Check metadata, PDFs, annotations and citations, then confirm that you can retrieve a source without recreating your old folder system.

The practical decision:

  • Pick Mendeley for a free conventional reference manager.
  • Pick Paperpile when Google Docs is central.
  • Pick EndNote for demanding publication workflows.
  • Pick ReadCube when reading and recommendations matter most.
  • Pick JabRef when you want free, open source and a plain .bib file.
  • If none fixes retrieval, keep the citation manager you trust and change how you search what you have read.

Zotero alternatives: quick answers

Is there a free alternative to Zotero?

Yes. Mendeley and JabRef are both free, and JabRef is also open source. Zotero is free too, so switching only to save money rarely pays off.

What is the best open source Zotero alternative?

JabRef. It is free, open source and stores your library as a plain .bib file, which suits LaTeX writing and avoids lock-in.

Is Mendeley better than Zotero?

Neither wins on price, since both are free. Zotero is open source and run by a nonprofit; Mendeley is Elsevier's reference manager and suggests papers based on what you read. Pick by which library and reader you prefer after a test project.

How do I export my Zotero library?

Right-click the library in the collections pane and choose Export Library, or open the File menu and choose Export Library. Zotero's export guide warns that an export is not a proper backup, so keep your original library until the new tool passes your test.
