WorkFlowy Alternatives in 2026: Dynalist, Logseq, Tana and More

The closest WorkFlowy alternative is Dynalist, which keeps the same nested bullets. Logseq is the free, open source pick, Checkvist a free keyboard outliner, Bike an offline Mac outliner, and Tana Outliner adds structure to bullets.

Choose the alternative by the job

Dynalist: a familiar outliner

Dynalist is the closest match if you like WorkFlowy's nested-bullet model. You can expand and collapse branches while separating projects, reference material, and personal notes into distinct documents.

Dynalist has a free plan with unlimited items and documents, per the Dynalist pricing page. New features are rare: on the Dynalist forum the team said it is busy with Obsidian and that the forum is now more about bug fixes.

Choose it when outlining still works but one endless list does not. It may not help when hierarchy itself is the problem: you must still decide where every bullet belongs and remember the document and branch later.

Logseq: local files and backlinks

Logseq is a free, open source alternative built around blocks, daily notes and backlinks. In April 2026 it split into two apps, as the Logseq team announced. Logseq OG keeps your notes as local Markdown files and gets security updates but no new features. The main Logseq app moved to database graphs, and its first 2.0 test release came out in July 2026. Our guide to Logseq alternatives covers whether to stay. Its journal-first workflow suits people who prefer recording notes on the day they occur and connecting them later instead of choosing a permanent location first.

Backlinks provide another route into a block beyond its position in an outline. Choose Logseq when local files or daily notes matter, but expect a workflow change rather than a direct WorkFlowy copy.

Tana: structured bullets

Tana Outliner combines outlines with fields and supertags. The company now runs two products: tana.inc is a meeting platform, and the note-taking outliner is a separate product, Tana Outliner, with a free plan. Recurring objects such as tasks, people, meetings, and projects can have consistent structures instead of looking like interchangeable bullets.

Choose it when you want to build a system inside an outliner. The tradeoff is more classification work: you decide what each bullet represents and which fields it needs. If maintenance drove you away from WorkFlowy, this may move the work rather than remove it.

Notion: documents and databases

Notion combines notes, documents, pages, and databases. It fits when information belongs in several formats rather than one nested-bullet tree.

The tradeoff is a larger system. You still decide where information belongs and may spend time designing pages and databases when you only wanted a quick place to think.

Free and open source WorkFlowy alternatives

Logseq is the open source pick. Its code is public on GitHub under the AGPL 3.0 license, and the app is free.

Three more outliners start free:

  • Dynalist Free includes unlimited items and documents, tags, dates, internal links and import and export. Pro adds attachments, version history and backups.
  • Checkvist has a free forever plan with unlimited hierarchical lists, Markdown notes, tags, search and import and export, per the Checkvist pricing page.
  • Tana Outliner has a free plan, with Plus and Pro tiers that add more, per the Tana Outliner pricing page.

WorkFlowy alternatives that work offline

If you want your outline as files on your own computer, two options stand out. Logseq OG stores graphs as local Markdown files. Bike is an outliner for Mac that saves documents as files: its .bike format is HTML you can open in a browser, and it also reads and writes .opml and .txt. It is built for the Mac.

Checkvist lists a mobile offline web app on its free plan. It is still an online service at heart, so treat offline mode as a fallback.

How to move your outline from WorkFlowy

Export to OPML, then import that file into the new app. WorkFlowy exports a single bullet or your whole account as formatted text, Markdown, plain text or OPML, from the bullet menu or from Settings with Export all, according to WorkFlowy's export help.

Dynalist imports OPML files, and its import guide also describes an Import from WorkFlowy option in the menu. That guide was last updated in 2020, so the OPML file is the safer route. Checkvist imports OPML or indented plain text: press im or choose Import in the Actions menu, per the Checkvist help. Bike opens .opml files directly.

Keep the WorkFlowy export as a backup until you have searched the new app for a few old items.

Decide whether another outliner solves the problem

Before moving, name the actual frustration:

  • Want separate documents but the same nested-bullet model? Test Dynalist.
  • Want local files, journals, and backlinks? Test Logseq.
  • Want typed structure inside bullets? Test Tana.
  • Need documents and databases? Test Notion.

The answer changes when retrieval is the problem. Every outliner depends partly on where you placed an item. As the tree grows, finding a note may require remembering the branch, project, or document that made sense when you saved it. Rebuilding the same hierarchy in another app will not remove that burden.

Test with real notes

Do not judge an empty workspace; empty outlines always look manageable.

Use a recall tool when outlining is not the job

Sometimes you do not need nested bullets. You need to keep an article, video, PDF, screenshot, or voice note and recover it when a related question appears.

A save-and-recall tool such as dEssence is one option. Save through the Chrome extension, Telegram bot, or web app at dessence.ai; later, ask about your saves in your own words and inspect the sources used in the answer.

This does not replace structured outlining. Use an outliner when arranging ideas is part of your thinking. Use a recall tool when maintaining the tree blocks access to material you already saved.
