Matter Alternatives in 2026: 9 Read-Later Apps, Prices Checked

The best Matter alternatives in 2026 are Readwise Reader if you highlight and listen, Instapaper if you want a simple read-later app with a free plan, and GoodLinks if you are on Apple devices and want to pay once. For listening, ElevenReader turns articles and PDFs into audio with 10 free hours a month. Matter itself is still live on iPhone, iPad and the web, so leave only for a reason. Every price below was read on the vendor's own pricing page on 25 September 2026.

The short answer

  • Closest to Matter overall: Readwise Reader. Reading, highlights, newsletters, feeds and text-to-speech on every platform, including Android.
  • Simple and free to start: Instapaper.
  • Apple only, no subscription: GoodLinks.
  • Mostly for listening: ElevenReader.
  • Keeping links, not reading them: Raindrop.io.
  • Finding an article you only half remember: dEssence.

Start with why you are leaving Matter

Matter combines saving, a clean reader, newsletters, highlights, offline search and text-to-speech. If those work for you, a new app may only move your unread list. Name the one thing you want to fix:

  • You use Android or Windows. Matter's site lists iPhone, iPad and the web.
  • You want to know the price up front. Matter's site does not show one.
  • You highlight a lot and want the highlights back later. Readwise Reader.
  • You mostly listen. ElevenReader or Reader.
  • You save more than articles. A bookmark manager like Raindrop.io.

How we picked

  • Each app had to replace a real part of Matter: the reader, the highlights, the listening or the saved library.
  • Prices were read on each vendor's own pricing page on 25 September 2026, with the billing period named. Euros stay in euros.
  • Closed apps are left out: Pocket and Omnivore both shut down.
  • Every entry has a "Best for" line and a "Where it falls short" line, ours included.

dEssence is our product and it is number 6 on this list. It has no reading view, no highlights and no audio, so it replaces none of what Matter does for reading. It is on the list for one case: your library got big and you cannot find the piece you mean.

1. Readwise Reader

The closest match to Matter, and the one that also runs on Android and Windows. Reader says it handles articles, PDFs, EPUBs, email newsletters, RSS feeds, YouTube videos and X threads in one place.

Price on 25 September 2026. Reader comes only with the full Readwise plan, $9.99 a month billed annually, after a 30 day free trial. Readwise Lite at $5.59 does not include Reader.

What it does. Highlights and notes that sync to Readwise for daily review and export to Notion, Obsidian and other apps. Text-to-speech with natural voices on every platform. Apps for iOS, Android, web, Mac, Windows and e-ink devices.

Best for: Matter readers who highlight a lot, or who need Android.

Where it falls short. It does much more than Matter, and it costs more. If you only read and listen, the extra tools are clutter.

2. Instapaper

The plain read-later app. Save a page and read a clean text version on the web, iOS or Android.

Price on 25 September 2026. Free with unlimited saves, folders and sync. Premium is $5.99 a month or $59.99 a year.

What it does. Reading view and folders, up to 5 notes a month for free. Premium adds unlimited notes, full-text search, a PDF reader, a permanent archive, Kindle sending, and AI voices with text-to-speech playlists on mobile.

Best for: people who want a real free plan and nothing more.

Where it falls short. Listening and full-text search are Premium features. Matter vs Instapaper comes down to this: Matter puts newsletters, writers and audio in one app, Instapaper keeps it simple.

3. GoodLinks

A read-later app for iPhone, iPad and Mac that you buy once.

Price on 25 September 2026. Its site says "buy once, use forever with one year of feature upgrades" and sends you to the App Store; the price is not shown on its website.

What it does. Reader view, colored highlights with notes, tags, search in title, author and content, Markdown export of highlights, one-tap summaries, iCloud sync.

Best for: Apple users who liked Matter's design and do not want a subscription.

Where it falls short. Apple only, and no newsletters or text-to-speech listed on its site.

4. ElevenReader

For the listening half of Matter. ElevenReader reads articles, PDFs, EPUB, DOCX and text files aloud, in more than 1,000 voices and more than 30 languages.

Price on 25 September 2026. Free with 10 hours of text-to-audio a month. Ultra is $11 a month, or $8.25 a month billed yearly, with unlimited text-to-audio.

What it does. Paste a link or upload a file and press play. It also has a large audiobook library.

Best for: people who used Matter mostly to listen.

Where it falls short. It is a listening app. There is no read-later library or highlights to replace Matter's reader.

5. Raindrop.io

A bookmark manager, for when your Matter library was really a pile of references.

Price on 25 September 2026. Free with unlimited bookmarks, collections and highlights. Pro is €3.18 billed monthly or €29.74 a year, shown to us in euros with VAT.

What it does. Every link becomes a card in collections and tags, with apps for Mac, iOS, Android and the main browsers. Pro adds full-text search, a permanent web archive and reminders.

Best for: keeping articles, tools and videos as references for years.

Where it falls short. It is not a reading app and has no text-to-speech.

6. dEssence

Ours, so the boundary first. dEssence is not a read-later app. No reading view, no highlights, no audio. You save from the Chrome extension, the Telegram bot or the web app, and later you ask for a piece by what you remember: "the essay about writing every morning for a year".

Price on 25 September 2026. There is a free plan and a paid Pro plan. Source: dessence.ai.

What it does. Keeps the links, pages and screenshots you save and answers questions about your library.

Best for: people who save to find things later, not to clear a reading queue.

Where it falls short. It replaces nothing Matter does for reading or listening. Keep a reader next to it.

7. wallabag.it

The hosted version of wallabag, open source since 2013.

Price on 25 September 2026. €11 a year or €4 for 3 months, all features in every plan, after a 14 day free trial.

What it does. Saves the full readable text of articles, offline reading on Android, iPhone and e-readers, tags, annotations and export. Hosted in Europe.

Best for: open source reading without a server of your own.

Where it falls short. No text-to-speech or newsletter inbox listed on its site.

8. Karakeep

Open source bookmarks you can self-host for free.

Price on 25 September 2026. Cloud Free with 10 bookmarks, then $4 a month or $40 a year. Self-hosted is free and unlimited.

What it does. AI tags, a reader view with highlights and shared lists.

Best for: people who want to run their own read-later server.

Where it falls short. Self-hosting means Docker and upkeep. The free cloud plan is only a test.

9. Linkwarden

Open source bookmarks that keep a full copy of every page, now with iOS and Android apps.

Price on 25 September 2026. Cloud $3 a month per user billed yearly after a 14 day free trial. Self-hosting is free.

What it does. Saves each page in several formats including full HTML, reader view with highlights and notes, AI tags, RSS feeds inside collections and shared collections.

Best for: research and team reading lists where the page must not disappear.

Where it falls short. Built for collecting and preserving. Reading and listening are not the focus.

Test before you export from Matter

  1. Save the same five articles in Matter and in the app you are considering: a long read, a newsletter and a PDF.
  2. Open one on your phone with the network off.
  3. Highlight a passage, then find it again tomorrow.
  4. Play one article as audio if you listen in Matter.
  5. Search for one piece by its idea, not its title.

Only then export your Matter library, and open a few moved items before you delete anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Matter alternative?

Readwise Reader for most people. It covers reading, highlights, newsletters and text-to-speech like Matter, and adds Android, Windows, PDFs and EPUBs. It comes with the full Readwise plan at $9.99 a month billed annually (25 September 2026). If you want free and simple, Instapaper.

Matter vs Instapaper: which is better?

Matter is better if you want newsletters, followed writers and audio in one app on iPhone, iPad or the web. Instapaper is better if you want a free plan that works on Android too. Instapaper Premium ($5.99 a month or $59.99 a year) adds text-to-speech and full-text search.

Matter vs Pocket: what happened to Pocket?

Pocket shut down in 2025, so the choice now is between Matter and the apps above. Matter's own site greets Pocket readers. See our Pocket alternatives guide if you are still moving a Pocket export.

Is Matter a bookmark app or a read-later app?

A read-later app. It saves articles, threads, PDFs, newsletters, YouTube videos and podcast episodes to read or listen to, with highlights and tags. If you mainly want to keep links organized, a bookmark manager like Raindrop.io fits better.

Is there a free Matter alternative?

Yes. Instapaper and Raindrop.io have free plans that do not run out, ElevenReader gives 10 free hours of listening a month, and Karakeep, Linkwarden and wallabag are free if you host them yourself.

Which Matter alternative works on Android?

Readwise Reader, Instapaper, Raindrop.io, wallabag.it and Linkwarden all list Android apps. GoodLinks does not; it is Apple only.
