Where are starred messages in WhatsApp?

WhatsApp now calls the list Starred. Where you find it depends on the device:

Android: tap More options (three dots) above your chat list, then Starred.
iPhone: tap Settings or your profile picture, then Starred.
WhatsApp Web and desktop: click the menu above your chat list, then Starred messages.
One chat or group: open the chat, tap its name at the top, then tap Starred. You will see only the stars from that conversation.

To star a message, touch and hold it, then tap the star. Removing a star does not delete the message.

Each result still belongs to its original conversation. Tapping it jumps back to that point in the chat, which matters when the useful explanation appeared immediately before or after the starred item.

Start by scanning if the message was starred recently. Sender, conversation, and visible text may be enough to recognize it. If the list is long, search for a specific word from the message.

Search the wording, not just the topic

WhatsApp search works best when you remember text that actually appeared. Search a street name for an address, the restaurant name for a link, or the person or product mentioned in a recommendation.

The harder case is remembering meaning without wording. You may recall a friend's recommendation near a castle in Lisbon even though the message never used restaurant or the neighborhood name you remember.

This can distinguish something that was genuinely recommended from a doctor, restaurant, article, or service that was merely mentioned.

After finding the information, remove the star if it served a short-lived task. A focused list is easier to scan later.

Starred messages missing from WhatsApp?

A star stays until you remove it, so a missing star usually means the message itself is gone:

The message was deleted. A deleted message cannot stay in Starred, whether you deleted it or the sender deleted it for everyone.
The chats were cleared. On Android, Clear all chats has a checkbox called Delete starred messages. If it was ticked, the stars went with the chats.
You moved to a new phone. Starred messages come back only with your chat history. WhatsApp can restore a cleared chat from a backup made before you cleared it, but anything after the last backup is lost.
You are looking in one chat. The chat's own Starred view shows only that conversation. Open the full Starred list instead.

Why starred messages become difficult

Every star enters one flat list. A work file can sit beside an address, joke, shopping link, and recommendation. There are no sections for topic or purpose.

The list works while it is short. As it grows, scanning slows down and search depends on remembering the original wording.

The information also stays inside WhatsApp. It will not appear while searching browser bookmarks or notes. If you save across several apps, you first have to remember which app holds the item.

Saving another copy does not automatically solve that problem. A screenshot creates another pile; copying a link into an unexplained note creates another place to search. You gain a backup but can lose the useful context.

Use stars for information needed soon

Stars work well for a meeting address, tomorrow's document, or instructions needed during the week. They are quick and keep the message connected to its conversation.

Review and remove these stars after use so the list does not become a permanent archive.

For something needed months later, capture enough context in a place intended for long-term recall. Do not keep only a URL, number, or doctor's name. Include who sent it, why it mattered, and another clue future you may remember.

Move lasting information to one chosen place

Choose one long-term home for recommendations, addresses, reference links, and other durable messages. It may be a notes app, bookmark manager, or personal memory tool.

Copy or forward the useful content and add the context that the isolated message lacks. Keep the sender's name when the source matters and retain the original wording when you may need to verify what was said.
