How to Recover Deleted Bookmarks in Chrome, Firefox and Safari

To recover deleted bookmarks, protect any surviving copy first: another device kept offline, Chrome's Bookmarks.bak file, a dated Firefox backup or an earlier Safari version on iCloud.com. Chrome itself has no trash for bookmarks.

How to Recover Deleted Bookmarks in Chrome, Firefox and Safari

The best first move when bookmarks disappear is to protect any surviving copy. If another laptop may still have them, disconnect it from the internet before opening the browser. Then check whether you are looking at the right profile. How to recover deleted bookmarks depends on whether the links were actually erased, hidden by a profile switch, or replaced during synchronization. Below are the checks for when everything is gone at once, the recovery steps for Chrome, Firefox and Safari, and what to do in Chrome, which has no recently deleted folder.

All my bookmarks are gone: check these first

When every bookmark vanishes at once, run three quick checks before any recovery attempt.

  1. Is the bookmarks bar just hidden? In Chrome, select More → Bookmarks and lists → Show bookmarks bar, as Google's bookmark help describes.
  2. Are you in the right profile? Look at the profile picture at the top right. Chrome brings your bookmarks to your other devices when you are signed in with your Google Account, according to Google's sign-in help. A different profile or a signed-out browser shows a different set.
  3. Are they in the Bookmark Manager? Open More → Bookmarks and lists → Bookmark Manager and search for a site you know you saved.

If all three come up empty, treat the bookmarks as deleted and start with the steps below, in order.

02 · Rescue another device's copy

On the disconnected laptop, inspect the bookmarks without reconnecting. If they survive, export them immediately. In desktop Chrome, open Bookmark manager, use the manager's three-dot menu, and choose Export bookmarks. Save the HTML file somewhere outside the browser profile.

In Firefox, open Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks, then Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML. Copy that export to another drive before reconnecting.

A phone may still display useful links but lack a convenient bulk export. Keep it offline while checking, and copy important addresses manually if necessary. Reconnecting simply to make export easier can allow the deletion to arrive first.

If the device has already synchronized the empty library, disconnecting cannot undo that. Move on to backups rather than repeatedly signing out and back in.

03 · How to recover deleted bookmarks in Chrome

For desktop Chrome, enter chrome://version in the address bar and find Profile Path. Copy that location into a note. Chromium's User Data Directory documentation identifies this field as the way to locate the active profile; it is more dependable than guessing a folder from an operating-system example.

Disconnect the computer, fully quit Chrome, and copy the profile folder to a separate safe location before editing files. Preserve any Bookmarks and Bookmarks.bak files you find. The latter may contain an earlier local bookmark collection, but it may already reflect the deletion or be absent.

For a profile using the conventional Bookmarks file, rename the current file to Bookmarks.before-recovery. Copy the preserved Bookmarks.bak into the profile and name that copy Bookmarks, without the .bak extension. Keep your untouched backup elsewhere. Reopen Chrome offline and inspect the result.

If the missing links return, export them to HTML immediately. If they do not, quit Chrome and retain the original files. Account bookmarks and newer storage arrangements can differ; do not rename every similarly named file or assume one local backup contains everything.

A .bak file is a possible snapshot, not a dated archive. Repeated launches and bookmark edits can replace useful evidence, which is why copying comes before experimenting.

Is there a recently deleted folder for bookmarks?

Not in Chrome. Google's help says it plainly: after you delete a bookmark, you can't get it back from Chrome itself. That leaves the local backup file above, another device, or your History.

The Bookmarks.bak file is a backup copy of the bookmarks file that Chrome makes after it starts, according to Chromium's bookmark storage code. Chrome writes that copy the first time your bookmarks change after it starts, so it usually holds them as they were at the last launch. The next change after a restart, including one that arrives through sync, replaces the copy, so close Chrome and copy the file before you touch anything else.

To find a lost page again, use History: select More → History → History and search for the site name. Chrome lists the pages you visited in the last 90 days, according to Google's history help. Bookmark the page again from there.

Safari and Firefox do keep earlier versions: iCloud archives your Safari bookmarks, and Firefox has dated backups, both covered next.

04 · Recover deleted bookmarks in Firefox

Before restoring, export today's Firefox bookmarks to HTML so newer additions are preserved. Open the menu > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks. In the Library window, choose Import and Backup > Restore, then select a dated backup from before the loss. Choose File lets you select a saved Firefox backup instead.

Mozilla's Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer guide says Firefox keeps the last 15 automatic backups. It also warns that restoring replaces the current bookmark set. After recovery, import your earlier HTML export if you need to merge back newer links, then remove duplicates carefully.

If the dated list is empty after a reinstall, check for an Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop or a backed-up profile. Enter about:support and use the Profile Folder entry to locate the active profile. Older profiles may contain a bookmarkbackups folder. Preserve the whole folder before selecting a backup.

How to restore Safari bookmarks from iCloud

If your Safari bookmarks sync with iCloud, you can bring back an earlier version on iCloud.com. Apple's guide to restoring Safari bookmarks gives these steps:

  1. Go to icloud.com/recovery and sign in to your Apple Account.
  2. Select Restore Bookmarks. You can sort the list by Date Deleted, Name or Folder.
  3. Next to the version from before the loss, select Restore.

Do not change your bookmarks until the restore finishes, because changes made during it are not saved. The restored bookmarks appear on every device with Safari turned on in iCloud settings. iCloud archives your current version before restoring, so you can go back to it if the older one is worse.

06 · Import, verify, and keep an export

Once you have a verified export, reconnect the intended browser profile and let its existing account state settle. Import the recovered HTML through the bookmark manager's Import bookmarks command. Check several folders and a second device before removing duplicates. Keep the export even when synchronization looks healthy.

For a small set of important pages, dEssence offers a separate saving route through its Chrome extension, Telegram bot, and web app. Save the link yourself and add a phrase such as “the guide that fixed the printer.” Those saves belong to your service account rather than the local browser profile, so a Chrome reset does not itself erase them. It cannot recover bookmarks that were never saved there.

Finally, make a fresh HTML export after cleanup and date the filename. Store it with your other backups, outside the profile folder. That modest habit gives the next recovery attempt a known starting point.

Frequently asked questions

Can deleted bookmarks be recovered?

Yes, if a copy survives somewhere: another device you keep offline, Chrome's Bookmarks.bak file before Chrome replaces it, a dated Firefox backup, or an earlier Safari version on iCloud.com. Without any copy, Chrome cannot bring a deleted bookmark back.

How do I see deleted bookmarks in Chrome?

You can't. Chrome has no list of deleted bookmarks. Search your History for the site instead, then bookmark the page again.

Do restored Safari bookmarks come back on all my devices?

Yes. After a restore on iCloud.com, the bookmarks appear on every device that has Safari turned on in iCloud settings.
