OneNote behaves like a flexible digital binder. You create notebooks, divide them into sections and add pages inside each section. Text and images can sit in different places instead of being forced into one vertical document.

That model suits class notes, meeting pages, project binders and stylus work. You can place a diagram beside your notes, add an image and continue writing elsewhere on the canvas.

The same freedom can create clutter. Pages with items scattered across the canvas may be harder to scan later, while many notebooks and sections become difficult to navigate without consistent names.

Choose OneNote when: the page itself is your workspace and you want control over where each item sits.

Pick Evernote for clipping and structured notes

Evernote uses a conventional top-to-bottom note layout. It captures typed notes, web pages, images and documents, then organizes them with notebooks and tags.

Both can become crowded. Search works best when remembered words match the note; browsing works best when you remember its notebook or section. Save the same article and document in both, then return later and find them without checking where you filed them.

Your existing ecosystem

OneNote fits naturally when work already depends on a Microsoft account and Microsoft applications, without introducing another subscription for basic use. Evernote fits when you want a dedicated note service outside a broader office suite.

Do not choose solely by the number of integrations. Judge the actions you repeat: writing, handwriting, clipping, attaching documents and finding old material.

Consider whether you need a notebook at all

Both apps assume a notebook is the main container: save something, place it into a structure, then browse or search that structure later.

If your main difficulty is remembering where you filed things, switching notebook apps may reproduce the same problem.
