How to Organize Firefox Bookmarks: Folders, Sorting and Tags
To organize Firefox bookmarks, open Manage Bookmarks, make a few folders named for what you will do, sort a folder A to Z with Sort By Name or drag links into your own order, and add tags for subjects that cross folders.
Open the complete Firefox bookmark library
The Library window lets you search by name, edit details and drag links between folders. Mozilla documents the controls in its Firefox bookmarks guide.
If you plan to delete a lot, back up your Firefox bookmarks first. Make the first pass quickly. Search for clear duplicates and links you know you no longer need. This is cleanup, not a review of your entire browsing history.
Use folders for actions, not vague subjects
Folders such as Read next, Recipes to try, Products to compare, Work references and Trips to plan communicate why a page was saved. Huge folders named Personal, Interesting or Miscellaneous do not.
Avoid deep trees. A recipe nested through Personal → Food → Cooking → Dinner → Vegetarian requires you to remember the complete route. One level is usually enough; add a second only for a split you use repeatedly.
Move items in batches. Search for recognizable terms such as recipe, hotel or documentation, select matches and drag them together.
How to sort Firefox bookmarks alphabetically
Right-click a folder in the Library and choose Sort By Name. The bookmarks in that folder line up A to Z. Open the Library with Ctrl+Shift+O on Windows or Linux, Command+Shift+O on a Mac, or from the menu: Bookmarks, then Manage bookmarks.
Mozilla's guide to sorting bookmarks notes that this order carries over to the Bookmarks sidebar, the bookmarks menu and the toolbar button. Sort By Name works on one folder at a time, so sort the folders you open most and leave stable archives alone.
To set your own order, drag. Expand the folder in the Library, drag a bookmark to the spot you want, or drop it on top of another folder to move it inside.
Sort Firefox bookmarks by date added
Use the Views button in the Library. Select a folder on the left, click Views, then Sort, and choose Sort by Added. The same menu also has Sort by Name, Sort by Location and Sort by Most Recent Visit.
This view is for looking only. Mozilla says the Views sort does not change the order in the sidebar, the bookmarks menu or the toolbar button. It is the quickest way to see what you saved last month before you file it.
How to organize bookmarks in Firefox mobile
On Android, use folders and the sort icon. Tap the menu button, then Bookmarks. To move a bookmark, tap the three dots next to it, choose Edit and pick a folder, or tap Folder and the add sign to create a new one.
The sort icon in Bookmarks orders the list by newest, oldest, A to Z, Z to A or your custom order, according to Mozilla's Firefox for Android bookmarks guide. Android has no drag to reorder. Mozilla's workaround is to sync with Firefox on a computer, arrange the order there and choose the custom order on the phone.
On iPhone and iPad, tap the menu, then Bookmarks, open the folder and tap Edit Bookmark at the bottom right. Tap a bookmark to change its title or address, or tap its folder to move it, then tap Save, as Mozilla's Firefox for iOS bookmarks guide shows.
Reserve the toolbar for frequent pages
Keep pages you open regularly: a calendar, current project, daily publication or frequent reference. A product you may buy next winter belongs elsewhere.
Shorten long labels so more links remain visible. “Company Project Management Dashboard” can become “Project.” Put temporary links in a This week folder and review it when the work ends.
Rename bookmarks using remembered words
Web pages often arrive with weak titles: model numbers, publication-first headlines or “Untitled.” Rename them while the reason for saving remains clear:

- Venue option near central station
These are retrieval clues, not formal titles. Storage is easy; retrieval determines whether the archive helps.
Use tags when a link belongs in several places
A Lisbon restaurant guide might live in Trips to plan with the tags lisbon, food and budget. A laptop review could live in Products to compare with laptop, travel and battery.

Find bookmarks from the address bar
Type a distinctive word from the renamed bookmark or one of its tags. Two or three concrete terms, such as lisbon vegetarian map, work better than a broad word such as travel.
If results remain crowded, search in the Library. When an item is hard to find, improve its name or tags immediately. The failed search reveals the words you actually remember.
Handle active decisions separately
Five desk chairs, three hotels or four tutorials are evidence for a current choice, not permanent reference material. Put them in a temporary action folder and delete it after deciding.
If the set needs notes, comparisons or material from several platforms, move it into a document, board or dEssence. dEssence can keep saved items together, answer questions about them and check an item when you set a watch yourself. Firefox can remain good at opening pages without becoming the home of every unfinished thought.
Give the library a monthly reset
Once a month, inspect folders tied to active work. Remove completed purchases, abandoned plans and articles you no longer intend to read. Rename anything whose purpose has become unclear.
Leave stable reference folders alone unless they cause trouble. The goal is not an immaculate archive. It is a collection whose important links return when you type what you remember.

How do I alphabetize all my Firefox bookmarks at once?
Firefox sorts one folder at a time. In the Library, right-click each folder you care about, including Bookmarks Toolbar and Bookmarks Menu, and choose Sort By Name.
Does sorting in the Library change my bookmarks menu?
Sort By Name does. The Views, then Sort option does not: it only changes how the Library window shows the folder.
